Details/Description: PANDA is the key program of IPY China Programme and also the first international research and study plan initiated and organized by Chinese scientists since China undertook expedition in polar regions. From Prydz Bay sea area in the north to Dome A, the summit of Antarctic ice sheet, in the south, the transect PANDA program will cover several key areas of global changes such as the biggest glacier system in east Antarctica, the third biggest ice shelf in the Antarctic and the important areas where Southern Ocean cold water mass forms. Through integrated investigation on the transect which contains the elements of ocean, ice-shelf, naked rock, ice sheet, atmosphere and near-land space, PANDA will observe the interactions among these layers and drill ice core sample in key positions. It will also integrate modern process study with historical evolution, so as to better study the relationship between the Antarctic region and the global changes, hence to forecast changes in the future. The main activities are as follows: ■ ice core drilling at Dome A , rock core drilling Gamburtsev, astronomical observation in the Antarctic. ■integrated observation of atmosphere environment and physical geography along the transect of Zhongshan-Dome A ■research on ancient climate environmental change at Grove Mountains ■integrated marine observation of transect along Amery Ice Shelf- Prydz Bay- South Indian Ocean ■IPY internationally coordinated observation at Zhongshan Station.

Remarks / Description: The Chinese Great Wall Station, located in King George Island, west Antarctic. At the moment there are 25 buildings, and the total area of Great Wall Station amounts to 4200 square meters. The station can accommodate 60 research personnel in summer and 20 research personnel in winter. Science disciplines carried out at the Station mainly include Biology, Ecology, Meteorology, Geology, Geochemistry, Environment and Ocean Sciences. According to statistics of the observed data from 1985 to 2000, Great Wall Station mean temperatures range from 1.9°C in January and February to -6.3°C in July, with the maximum of 11.7°C and the minimum of -26.6°C. The multi-yearly averaged wind speed of Great Wall Station is 7.2 m/s; the most frequent wind direction is WNW(18%) and the maximum wind speed is 40.3m/s.

Remarks / Description: The Chinese Zhongshan Station, located at Larsemann Hills, was erected on the 26th February, 1989. At the moment there are 15 buildings, and the total area amounts to 2700 square meters. The station can accommodate 80 research personnel in summer and 25 research personnel in winter. The science disciplines carried out at the station include Upper Atmosphere Physics (UAP), Meteorology, Glaciology, Oceanography, Geology, Geochemistry(Meteorite), Geography and Environmental Science, and so forth.Compared with Great Wall Station, the climate in Zhongshan Station is more continental. The mean temperatures there range from -0.2°C in January to -15.9°C in September, with the maximum of 9.6°C and the minimum of -45.7°C. The multi-yearly averaged wind speed of Zhongshan Station is 7.0 m/s; with the most frequent wind direction of E(27%) and the maximum wind speed of 46.2m/s. Katabatic winds regularly occur at Zhongshan Station.

Remarks: “Xuelong” is B1 ice-breaker with displacement 21025 tons, 167 meters long, 22.6m wide, the maximum navigation ability for 20,000 miles. “Xuelong” has been upgraded for 3 times since 1993. the present vessel has the atmosphere, hydrology, biological, computer data processing center, meteorological forecast center and Marine physical, chemical, biological, geology, meteorological and clean and so on a series of scientific research laboratories, with a total area of 500 square meters. Equipped with the MK-3 / WOCE CTD and water sampler; 75KHZ and ADCP fish explorer; survey equipment such as was A frame, CTD winch; 3000 meters hydrological winch and two 6000 meters geological winches, can undertake multi-disciplinary comprehensive Marine investigation. Her main task for 2009/2010 is to transport personnel, materials and fuels and provide a platform for ocean investigation.

Objective:
Implementation Report: Waste management regulation has been implemented by every expedition wherever they are on board M/A Xuelong or at the three Chinese Antarctic stations. All wastes are separated and treated according to the regulation. And the waste produced in the Kunlun Station was brought back to the Zhongshan Station for further treatment. Waste management regulation for the station: The solid waste materials are divided into 4 catalogues and treated in different ways at the three stations; combustible materials are not permitted to store in the station for a long time, and they are burned in the incinerator after being recorded and the remains are put in case and be transported back to China; metal, plastic and other non-combustible materials are collected to be transported back to China; glass materials are smashed into pieces and put into cases to be transported back to China; battery useless is collected into cases and be transported back to China; the daily domestic liquid waste is treated in the sewage treatment system and then discharged into the sea; the chemical liquid waste is collected; the fuel waste and lubricant are collected separately. The Kunlun Station is a summer station on the ice sheet , it is ourintention to bring as much waste as possible to the Zhongshan Station. Waste management regulations for the vessel: All the wastes on the M/V “Xuelong”, including the daily domestic liquid waste and the solid waste, were treated according to the related regulations of the IMO.

Purpose: There are two assignments to be done on Ardley Island. Firstly, the temporal and spatial changes of greenhouse gases flux emission from Ardley tundra soils will be measured and the effects of different environment factors on it will also be studied. Secondly, the eco-geological investigations will be carried out to find abandoned ancient penguin nests on the island and then the penguin remains in them will be collected.
