Purpose: 1) Detailed study of the active layer in key areas of Maritime Antarctica, in terms of its thermal, hydric and physico-chemical dynamics, establishing a database regarding the soils from this region; (2) Characterization and mapping of soils (2) Biogeochemical dynamics of soils due to increasing permafrost melting with emphasis on mechanisms of carbon sinking and emissions in soils and development of patterned ground
Summary of activities: Combined sampling of soils and sediments (max of 500 g per sample for each horizon or layer) and samples of 500g of rocks or coarse materials on different substrates of Coppermine. Considering 17 perfis soil profiles, the total of sample was approximately 85 kg of soil; Installation of one site of automatic monitoring sites for active layer temperature and moisture.

Purpose: - Conduct the phytosociological and microbiological studies to locate the different vegetation and soil microbial communities occurring in the study area, using the quadrats technique to delimit the plant and microbial communities, assessing trends and the occurrence of environmental impacts caused by phenomena natural or by human action. - Describe the plant formations and associations, based mainly on vegetation cover and species lists. - Determine the abundance, diversity and identity of microorganisms (bacteria, archaea and fungi) that live in the studied areas. - Relate the plant and microbial communities of the region with the bird colonies, through the comparative study of plant and microbial communities in regions near the bird colonies and those away from them, which are important data in the impact assessment environment, being indicative of the presence of birds. - To assess the genetic diversity of plant species of Maritime Antarctic to understanding of the phylogeographical relationship of Polytrichum moss species, using AFLP and microsatellite as molecular markers, in order to understand the dynamics of populations of Subantarctic and bipolar species.
Summary of activities: Collecting periphyton diatoms algae to conduct taxonomic and ecological studies. A collection Deschmpsia antarctic to study a phytopatologic fungus that is attacking this plant in Antarctica.

Purpose: Establish though non invasive sampling methods the levels of persistent toxic substances (organochlorated pesticides and polychlorinated biphenyls), trace-elements (mercury, cadmium and selenium) and stress levels (corticosterone) of the avian community of the Admiralty Bay and other areas of the Antarctic Peninsula, with emphasis in Skuas and Penguins. The analysis planned in this study, made in an integrated and complimentary manner, will contribute to expand the knowledge about the ecology of the studied species populations, especially in relation to the contamination levels and the stress ecology. Beyond the scientific interest, studies that expand the knowledge about these birds ecology will have future application in conservation plans for these birds, as well as for related species and the environment they live
Summary of activities: Collected one (1) soil sample from the beach (about 100 g). Collected one (1) carcass P. Antarctica (remains of predation, just wings and feathers). Collected seven (7) faeces samples Arctocephalus australis. All garbage mainly plastic was found collected, cataloged and stored. Collected 15 carcasses of P. Adeliae, P. Antarctica, C. maccormicki, C. lonnberg and Larus dominicanus (remains of predation). Collected one (1) soil sample from the beach (about 100 g). All garbage found was collected, cataloged and stored.

Purpose: 1. Perform diversity analysis of seaweeds and associated fungi, using morphoanatomical features and molecular approaches. 2. Associated distribution and biomass of conspicuous seaweed with abiotic parameters. 3. Perform morphoanatomical and molecular studies with Chlorophytes, Rhodophytes, Phaeophyceae and associated fungi / yeasts using several taxonomical tools; 4. Monitor temperature, salinity, pH, dissolved oxygen, nitrogen and phosphorus compounds of water column from sampling sites; 5. Estimate index of Escherichia coli and Enterococcos faecalis in adjacent waters and on macroalgal thallus / fronds; 6. Analyze concentrations of heavy metals in bottom sediments and in macroalgal thallus; 7. Publishing teaching material regarding seaweeds species and marine fungi aiming to promote PROANTAR and introduce the polar research relevance in public high schools; 8. Trainee human resources through monographs, Master and Doctoral program.
Summary of activities: Samples (n=6) of distinct species (20-50 spp.) of seaweeds will be collected using spatula in the intertidal area. In the shallow subtidal area sampling will be performed using a Van Veen grabber (opening of 30 cm, without trawling). Tree sampling transects on intertidal area (500 m long each) from the rocky beach, parallel and transversal to the coastal line.
