Operational Information - National Expeditions - Military
Military personnel in expeditions: HMS Endurance - Ice Patrol Ship (Royal Navy) Dead weight 2500 tonnes. Up to 140 Officers and Crew.
Number and Type of Armaments possessed by personnel: Miltary equipment only. Sundry small arms.
Number and Type of Armaments of ships and aircraft: HMS Endurance has 2 unarmed Royal Navy Lynx helicopters aboard, these are used to provide aerial photographic and logistical support for field operations of the British Antarctic Survey.
Information and Location of Military Equipment in the AT Area: HMS Endurance will operate 3 work periods South of 60° latitude between November 2008 - March 2009. Areas to be visited include the Antarctic Peninsula, Weddell Sea and the South Shetland Islands. HMS Endurance provides charting and hydrographic survey work logistical support for BAS Science programmes, which this season will include reviews of ASPAs and Historical bases follow up work. The ship also undertakes visits to tourist areas as prioritsed by the Hydrographic Commitee of Antarctica (HCA) and the UK Hydrographic Office.
