Type: Summer
Location:
Site Name: Utsteinen   Lat: 71º 57´ 00´´ S   Long: 23º 20´ 00´´ E
Maximum Population: 35
Medical Facilities: 2 doctors were on site during the season as well as a few trained paramedics (guides & fire-fighters). Tele-medicine links have been set up with a hospital in Sion (CH). This allows real time support from trained medical staff in case of an emergency. Few unexpected medical interventions were required. Treatment was provided for minor health issues. The medical staff assisted with the IMAGE human biology project. Medical waste are collected in separate containers & shipped to Capetown.
Remarks / Description: In the 2017-18 season, the level of activity was significantly increased in comparison with 2016-17 where a reduced crew was deployed. The number of participants was much higher than in 2016-17 and numbered a total of 53 people. Station occupancy rate (daily mean): 24 (12 in 2016-17), Total Man-days on site : 2600. Demolition of sleeping quarters in the South Annex & construction of the Second Phase of the South Annex, comprising new sleeping accommodation, were carried out. The Energy production from the solar PV and Wind park was sufficient to power all activities (except vehicles) during the season. Despite increased occupation of the Station & construction work, the generators remained off most of the season. Station water production from melt water was sufficient for all purposes and there were few days when there were restrictions imposed. The efficiency of the heat exchanger is much higher than previous models and there are 3 storage tanks now available. This gives an increased capacity for the production of water from snow. Treatment of waste-water has been less than optimal in the last seasons due to the increase in the occupancy rate of the Station. The initiative was taken to contact the designer of the system & request a full audit, which is currently underway. All waste produced at the station and in the field is collected, reused or sorted and stored for evacuation. It was once again not possible to evacuate containers of waste from the Station due to the ship cruise schedule, which did not permit the evacuation of containers of waste. Currently around 15t of various type of waste are stored in containers. A Drum crusher unit has been purchased and installed in a container. It can handle 20 drums in an hour. This will allow to reduce the number of containers required to evacuate the drums & will take up much less space than before. 276 drums (200L) of JET A1 & 43 drums of petrol were used. The environmental impact of operations was significantly reduced this season. Directly : 1. realisation of Zero Emissions operations during the most part of the season has reduced fuel use significantly. 2. roll out of the new virtual server also significantly reduced loads on the grid. 3. installation of the new snow-melter unit inside the building reduced the energy needed to heat pipes and heat trace tubing to counteract energy lost to the surroundings. 4. building of an extra entrance lobby has meant better control of thermal stability in the satellite rack. Indirectly : The suspension of the use of the water treatment unit has significantly impacted energy consumption as the system is one of the main loads on the grid.

Number of Voyages: 1
Maximum Crew: 3
Maximum Passengers: 9
Remarks: In the framework of the RECTO project funded by the Belgian Science Policy Office, the expedition BELGICA 120 aims at carrying out a biodiversity census in the Western Antarctic Peninsula in March 2018, and to test-case the potential for an agile sampling platform (the Australis sailboat). The expedition bears a strong historic link to the first scientific expedition to overwinter in Antarctica in 1897-99 recording the first intertidal biodiversity data, 120 years ago. The Belgica120 crew left Ushuaia on Feb the 25th, around 10 am, The initial timing was set to an initial 12 hours to get to Cape Horn, then 2.5 days to cross the Drake Passage to the Peninsula. On the second day of navigation, the engine’s gearbox had a major incident so the crew had to stop the engine, after approximately 1/3 of the distance. The expedition turned around and sailed back towards Ushuaia. None of the scientific activities were performed.
