Remarks / Description: The root philosophy is to avoid potential waste through planning of the procurement and logistics of recurrent supplies. This applies to most aspects of operation, upstream and downstream, and all types of waste, solid, liquid or gaseous. The station in itself is an energy prototype that uses renewable energies to a large extent for functioning, thereby reducing the amount of waste generated in the form of air pollution from the energy production. By reducing the amount of fuel required very significantly, it has also been possible to reduce all waste associated with the transport of fuel by ship and overland, and with the evacuation of empty fuel containers from the Antarctic continent. Further reductions are envisaged. However, vehicle operations are still run on fuel. A prototype electric vehicle is in development to address the needs for field transport. Waste water from all sources is treated by the prototype bio-reactor of the station. The end product is a sludge composed of bacterial cultures (nitrifying – denitrifying bacteria). These bacteria are always contained and are not at any risk of accidental release into the environment. Sludge from the bio-reactors is reduced by filtration and compression to less than 1 cubic metre or 40 kg. This sludge could eventually be reduced further by freeze drying, but to avoid the risk of any contamination of the site by wind borne coliform bacteria, it has been decided to seal the sludge in a small high density polyethylene tank, prior to removal by ship to Cape Town for handling and disposal. Grey water is continuously recycled and is used in the laundry machines and toilets. Excess water, which is treated and free of any contaminants, is released harmlessly into the deep fissure between the ice and the rock (rimaye) where it is sealed and stable – this being outside of the zone of glacier flow to the coast.

Remarks: In the framework of the RECTO project funded by the Belgian Science Policy Office, the expedition aims at carrying out a biodiversity census in the Western Antarctic Peninsula in March 2019, and to test-case the potential for an agile sampling platform (the Australis sailboat). The expedition bears a strong historic link to the first scientific expedition to overwinter in Antarctica in 1897-99 recording the first intertidal biodiversity data, 121 years ago. This historic expedition was led by Adrien de Gerlache, onboard the RV Belgica. There is a dearth of knowledge about biodiversity levels found in intertidal environment in the Southern Ocean, a situation opposite to that found in other oceans. These habitats are exposed to fast-paced changes in key environmental parameters (seawater temperature, salinity, primary production, sea-ice regimes), and host organisms which have been facing past events shaping the function and structure of ecosystems. On top of understanding these aspects, the RECTO/vERSO projects have identified plasticities (trophic, dispersive) and connectivities as a key areas of research to understand the impact of the environmental changes on Antarctic ecosystems. Another key aspect of this expedition it to assess the feasibility of low-impact cruises for Antarctic field sampling. Customarily, scientific cruises are conducted by large cost-intensive icebreakers, including a large crew and multiple research teams. Due to the conflict of interest in such a large science party, expedition leaders can often only slowly react to short term changes (e.g. weather) to accommodate for all areas of research. Furthermore, due to the size of such ships, sampling is restricted to deeper waters. Lastly, the environemtnal impact of such expeditions is significantly larger, compared to smaller sailing vessels. The expedition on the “Australis” will not only yield valuable data and samples, but also act as a proof of concept as a low-impact, cost-efficient and agile expedition to the Southern Ocean. All proposed activities are expected to have no environmental impact. All participants are aware of the “Environmental Guidelines for operation of RPAS” and all activities will be in full conversance and adherence of these guidelines.

Remarks: After arrival at White Desert’s new camp - Wolf’s Fang – participants will proceed with the necessary preparations and head towards the mountains such as Holtanna and Ulvetana. On foot & crampons on areas of blue ice or by ski where the snow permits it, they will progress in a direct line. After arrival, they will set up a base camp, to then go discover the surroundings during day outings.
