Project Name/Number: Alteration process of basaltic rocks under extreme conditions and implications for Mars

Main Activity/ Remarks: The main objective of this project is to understand the alteration mechanisms of basaltic rocks under extreme conditions, to determine the effects of alteration products on biogeochemical systems and reflect the result to receive better understanding about extraterrestrial environments especially on Mars. During 2017/2018 season rock, sediment and water samples, as well as lichen samples (for geochemical classification of the area) were collected in selected sites on the western shore of Admiralty Bay.

Project Name/Number: Ecological monitoring – long-term bird and pinniped observation programme on King George Island

Main Activity/ Remarks: To detect and record significant changes in critical biological components of the ecosystem a whole year program to monitor breeding and non-breeding birds and pinniped species in ASPA No 128 Western Shore of Admiralty Bay, King George Island, South Shetland Islands has been conducted over the past 40 years. Since 2007 monitoring program in ASPA No 151 Lions Rump, King George Island, South Shetland Islands was established by Poland and has been conducted during each Antarctic summer season. This krill-dependent predator monitoring program follows the CCAMLR Ecosystem Monitoring Program (CEMP) standards. The following CEMP indices were included: penguin breeding population size (number of pairs) (P. adeliae, P. papua, P. antarcticus), breeding success (chick counts) (P. adeliae, P. papua, P. antarcticus), penguin chick weight (g) at fledgling (Procedure A) (P. adeliae), breeding chronology (P. adeliae, P. papua, P. antarcticus). Additionally, the following parameters were recorded: flying birds census and breeding success, spatial and geographic distribution of bird nests, pinniped census and breeding population estimation, records of non-breeding bird species, monitoring of marked birds and pinnipeds, records of whale appearance in King George Bay. Potential impact of UAVs overflights on Adelié penguins (Pygoscelis adeliae), Gentoo penguins (P. papua) and southern giant petrel (Macronectes giganteus) were investigated. Breeding chronology and success of three penguin species (P. adeliae, P. papua, P. antarcticus) were recorded by remote, automated cameras in ASPA No 151 Lions Rump and ASPA No 128 Western Shore of Admiralty Bay (Copacabana, Pt. Thomas, Patelnia) under the multinational (US, Argentine, Australia, Poland, Ukraine) scientific program “Establishing a CEMP Camera Network in Subarea 48.1” (CCAMLR Ecosystem Monitoring Program Proposal to Use CEMP Special Funds).

Project Name/Number: Evolution and past range dynamics of the terrestrial Antarctic biota: insights from next generation phylogeography of endemic mosses

Main Activity/ Remarks: Project will bring a significant contribution to the unresolved biogeographical problem – the history of the contemporary terrestrial biota of Antarctica, with mosses being used as biological models. The main aims of the project that will be: (1) to understand the evolutionary history and range dynamics of the Antarctic mosses; (2) to provide a general time frame for the evolution of the Antarctic moss flora; (3) to resolve the problem of taxonomic status of Antarctic populations of several key taxa. In this context, we want to answer the following specific biogeographical questions: was there a long-term survival of biota in systems of isolated, local refugia within Antarctica? If yes, was the species survival of glacial maxima based on single or multiple refugia across Antarctica? Which of the main regions (continental Antarctica, maritime Antarctica or Subantarctic) may have played a particularly important role in the survival of species? Mosses are the most important elements of flora and prominent constituents of Antarctic plant cover and thus a focus on this group is essential to understand the processes underlying the biogeographical and evolutionary history of the terrestrial Antarctic biota. During 2017/2018 season samples of numerous moss species were collected from selected sites on the western shore of Admiralty Bay.

Project Name/Number: Foraging ecology of two sympatric storm petrels breeding in the maritime Antarctic

Main Activity/ Remarks: Foraging ecology of two sympatric pelagic seabirds, Wilson’s storm petrel Oceanites oceanicus, and black-bellied storm petrel Fregetta tropica, breeding in maritime Antarctic (King George Island, South Shetlands) were investigated. Rapid global changes induce broad-scale modifications in marine ecosystem posing new and unprecedented challenges for many organisms. The project aims at: 1) assessing the degree of inter-specific and intra-specific segregation and individual foraging specialization; 2) investigating variability of diet composition at different temporal scales; 3) studying potential effects of climate change on foraging strategies by comparing the diet composition between recent and available historical data from the same site; 4) comparing foraging behavior and distribution between the species and sexes based on data from archival light loggers (geolocators); 5) comparing locations of foraging areas estimated from regression function based on isotopic signatures of feathers. Nests belonging to both species were mapped, feathers and regurgitated food samples were collected, body measurements of adults and chicks were done. Project Name/Number: Hydrology of glaciers of the Western shore of the Admiralty Bay

Main Activity/ Remarks: The hydrological monitoring of the selected glaciers located on the western shore of the Admiralty Bay enables the calculation of the amount of sediment flowing from glaciers, and the description of the transport and accumulation in the their channels. Measurements will help to determinate the intensity of the fluvial and glacial processes and will be the first attempt to identify the further direction of their changes. Whole-year measurements of intensity of bedload transport (bedload traps), as well as measurements of water velocity (electromagnetic flowmeter) in several streams in the Baranowski Glacier area were conducted.

Main Activity/ Remarks: The aim of the project is to describe in detail chemical composition of water and soil samples from the area of Admiralty Bay, including its variation during the Antarctic season. Changes taking place in glaciers and permafrost areas are frequently regarded as one of the key indicators of global climate change. These mechanisms affect not only hydrological processes, but at the same time can cause changes of water chemistry. Water, soil, sediments and snow samples were collected at numerous sites along the western shore of Admiralty Bay.

Project Name/Number: Is the rhizosphere microbiota of Antarctic flowering plants increasing their resistance?

Main Activity/ Remarks: The project assumes that species composition of microorganisms living in the rhizosphere of native plants (Deschampsia antarctica and Colobanthus quitensis) differs from the species composition of bacteria present in the rhizosphere of Poa annua – plant alien to the Antarctica. The project also assumes that microorganisms from the rhizosphere of Antarctic flowering plants increase the resistance of these species to adverse environmental factors, as evidenced by wide spectrum of sites inhabited by them. During 2017/2018 season samples of plant material (Deschampsia antarctica, Colobanthus quitensis) and soil from selected sites of western shore of Admiralty Bay and King George Bay were collected.

Project Name/Number: Plastic pollution in the Southern Ocean

Main Activity/ Remarks: The microplastic pollution of the marine ecosystem is a growing issue. Antarctica, once believed to be pristine, is also threatened by microplastic pollution, however not enough data exists to estimate the size of the damage and the impact of microplastic on the Antarctic environment, especially Antarctic wildlife. During 2017/2018 season water samples (within 100 meter water column, corresponding to the depths at which gentoo penguins forage) were collected onboard of m/v Ocean Diamond (Quark Expedition Co.) in the Antarctic Peninsula region. Plastic fragments were filtered, size fractions were separated. Sampling and analyzes were conducted according to standarised method scheme provided by NOAA Marine Debris Program.

Project Name/Number: POROCO - Mechanisms controlling the evolution and geomorphology of rocky coasts in polar climates

Main Activity/ Remarks: The principal aim of the Polar Rock Coasts (POROCO) project is to quantify the processes controlling the evolution and behavior of rock coasts uplifted over recent millennia (glacioisostasy) in polar climates, based on representative examples from Svalbard (Arctic) and South Shetlands (Antarctic). POROCO aims to develop predictions of future rock coast change under scenarios of continued increases in air temperature, sea-level rise and the frequency and intensity of storms entering polar seas. Geomorphological mapping of rocky coasts of Admiralty Bay (King George Island) using non-invasive measurements of rock surface weathering (Schmidt hammer rock tests, microroughness meter, traversing micro-erosion meter) and ground-penetrating radar survey of the morainic ridges was done, samples (pebbles and rocks) from uplifted and modern beaches were collected.

Remarks / Description: “Arctowski” Station is located on a flat marine gravel terrace 6 m asl and ca 500 meters east of Point Thomas on the western shore of Admiralty Bay on King George Island. The area around the station is ice-free. The station consists of several buildings (living quarters, laboratories, warehouses, power plant, Tourist Information Centre, lighthouse). Fuel tanks (projected for 150 sqm) and the old main fuel tank (in renovation) are situated ca 700 m from the main building. The station is located within the Antarctic Specially Management Area No.1.
