Details/Description: To detect and record significant changes in critical biological components of the ecosystem a whole year program to monitor breeding and non-breeding birds and pinniped species in ASPA No 128 Western Shore of Admiralty Bay, King George Island, South Shetland Islands has been conducted over the past 34 years. Since 2007 monitoring program in ASPA No 151 Lions Rump, King George Island, South Shetland Islands was established by Poland and has been conducted during each Antarctic summer season. This krill-dependent predator monitoring program follows the CCAMLR Ecosystem Monitoring Program (CEMP) standards.

Main Activity/ Remarks: To detect and record significant changes in critical biological components of the ecosystem a whole year program to monitor breeding and non-breeding birds and pinniped species in ASPA No 128 Western Shore of Admiralty Bay, King George Island, South Shetland Islands has been conducted over the past 40 years. Since 2007 monitoring program in ASPA No 151 Lions Rump, King George Island, South Shetland Islands was established by Poland and has been conducted during each Antarctic summer season. This krill-dependent predator monitoring program follows the CCAMLR Ecosystem Monitoring Program (CEMP) standards. The following CEMP indices were included: penguin breeding population size (number of pairs) (P. adeliae, P. papua, P. antarcticus), breeding success (chick counts) (P. adeliae, P. papua, P. antarcticus), penguin chick weight (g) at fledgling (Procedure A) (P. adeliae), breeding chronology (P. adeliae, P. papua, P. antarcticus). Additionally, the following parameters were recorded: flying birds census and breeding success, spatial and geographic distribution of bird nests, pinniped census and breeding population estimation, records of non-breeding bird species, monitoring of marked birds and pinnipeds, records of whale appearance in King George Bay. Potential impact of UAVs overflights on Adelié penguins (Pygoscelis adeliae), Gentoo penguins (P. papua) and southern giant petrel (Macronectes giganteus) were investigated. Breeding chronology and success of three penguin species (P. adeliae, P. papua, P. antarcticus) were recorded by remote, automated cameras in ASPA No 151 Lions Rump and ASPA No 128 Western Shore of Admiralty Bay (Copacabana, Pt. Thomas, Patelnia) under the multinational (US, Argentine, Australia, Poland, Ukraine) scientific program “Establishing a CEMP Camera Network in Subarea 48.1” (CCAMLR Ecosystem Monitoring Program Proposal to Use CEMP Special Funds).

Project Name/Number: Foraging ecology of two sympatric storm petrels breeding in the maritime Antarctic

Main Activity/ Remarks: Foraging ecology of two sympatric pelagic seabirds, Wilson’s storm petrel Oceanites oceanicus, and black-bellied storm petrel Fregetta tropica, breeding in maritime Antarctic (King George Island, South Shetlands) were investigated. Rapid global changes induce broad-scale modifications in marine ecosystem posing new and unprecedented challenges for many organisms. The project aims at: 1) assessing the degree of inter-specific and intra-specific segregation and individual foraging specialization; 2) investigating variability of diet composition at different temporal scales; 3) studying potential effects of climate change on foraging strategies by comparing the diet composition between recent and available historical data from the same site; 4) comparing foraging behavior and distribution between the species and sexes based on data from archival light loggers (geolocators); 5) comparing locations of foraging areas determined based on geolocators data and estimated from regression function based on isotopic signatures of feathers. Nests belonging to both species were mapped, feathers and regurgitated food samples were collected, body measurements of adults and chicks were done.

Project Name/Number: Foraging range and habitat preference of non-breeding pygoscelid penguins in CCAMLR subarea 48.1

Main Activity/ Remarks: Multi-partner (Norway, Argentine, Poland) project collecting tracking data on Adélie penguins (Pygoscelis adeliae). The project aims at providing a comprehensive dataset characterizing the at-sea movement of penguins from a crucial and as-yet unstudied demographic (summer movement of non-breeding adults). The information on the foraging behaviour of non-breeding birds is fundamental for assessing spatial and functional overlap between foraging penguins and krill fishery, as well as for deriving appropriate models of penguin at-sea habitat utilization. Transmitters were put on non-breeding Adélie penguins - 15 individuals

Project Name/Number: Hydrology of glaciers of the Western shore of the Admiralty Bay

Main Activity/ Remarks: The hydrological monitoring of the selected glaciers located on the western shore of the Admiralty Bay enables the calculation of the amount of sediment flowing from glaciers, and the description of the transport and accumulation in the their channels. Measurements will help to determinate the intensity of the fluvial and glacial processes and will be the first attempt to identify the further direction of their changes. Whole-year measurements of intensity of bedload transport (bedload traps), as well as measurements of water velocity (electromagnetic flowmeter) in several streams in the Baranowski Glacier area were conducted.

Project Name/Number: Identification and determination of chemical compounds present in waters from Admiralty Bay area

Main Activity/ Remarks: The aim of the project is to describe in detail chemical composition of water and soil samples from the area of Admiralty Bay, including its variation during the Antarctic season. Changes taking place in glaciers and permafrost areas are frequently regarded as one of the key indicators of global climate change. These mechanisms affect not only hydrological processes, but at the same time can cause changes of water chemistry. Water, soil, sediments and snow samples were collected at numerous sites along the western shore of Admiralty Bay.

Project Name/Number: MONICA - A novel approach to monitoring the impact of climate change on Antarctic ecosystems

Main Activity/ Remarks: The aim of the project is to study impact of climate change on Antarctic ecosystem and biodiversity. The program’s detailed objectives are: 1. adapting fixed-wing UAVs, equipped with advanced sensors, to the maritime Antarctic climate, 2. using UAVs for collecting environmental data (digital aerial photographs with application of geo-information tools) on King George Island. Participants: Institute of Biochemistry and Biophysics, Warsaw University of Technology (Poland) and Northern Research Institute (Norway). Twelve flight missions (total distance 2024.143 km, total flight time 19 h 51 min) were performed between 8th November and 1st December 2016, covering coastal zones of ASPA No 128 Western Shore of Admiralty Bay, ASPA No 151 Lions Rump, Chabrier Rock, Shag Islands, Cape Vauréal, Turret Point, Three Sisters and Penguin Island).

Project Name/Number: Monitoring of the structure of the Earth’s electric field from Polish observation stations in the Antarctic, Arctic and central Europe

Main Activity/ Remarks: This project aims at better understanding of the processes and phenomena operating in the Earth’s electric atmosphere and ionosphere. Coordinated observations of atmospheric electricity (the global atmospheric electric circuit, GEC) are done at Polish observational stations: Geophysical Observatory in Swider (Poland: 21.25°E, 52.12°N, geomagnetic latitude ~48°N), Polish Polar Station “Hornsund” (Svalbard, Norway: 15.50°E, 77.00°N, geom. ~74°N), Polish Antarctic Station “Arctowski” (South Shetland Islands: 58.47°W, 62.16°S, geom. ~51°S). The role of the GEC generator that has its source in the solar-wind magnetosphere interaction and the ionospheric convection are studied at different latitudes. Using superDARN radar observations we will reduce the electric data from polar regions for the effects of the ionospheric convection and we will be looking for such effects at mid-latitudes

Project Name/Number: Multidisciplinary monitoring program in Admiralty Bay (Subarea 48.1), King George Island, South Shetland Islands

Main Activity/ Remarks: Project includes biological (seasonal and multi-year variability of phyto- and zooplankton populations) and geochemical monitoring of Admiralty Bay (King George Island) and its western shore. Comparison of collected data with archive data sets compiled since 1977 will allow us to use Admiralty Bay as a model of climatic changes observed in Antarctic Peninsula region, and estimate their impact on the functioning of key ecosystem elements. Water and sediment samples from the area of Admiralty Bay were collected.

Project Name/Number: The influence of selected abiotic factors on the functioning of tidal zones in the areas of Admiralty Bay

Main Activity/ Remarks: Antarctica is the ideal model system for studies due to rapid climate changes, with diminishing range of ice and its thickness having impact on living organisms. Tidal flats as extremely dynamic environment forming the border zone between marine and terrestrial system may be used as an indicator of the forthcoming changes. Data on the physical and biological parameters of tidal flats located in Admiralty Bay area were collected, photographic documentation were gathered, data loggers (temperature, light, salinity) were installed.

Project Name/Number: Tracking the overwinter habitat use of krill dependent predators from Subarea 48.1

Main Activity/ Remarks: Multi-partner (Argentine, Poland, Ukraine, US) project collecting tracking data on penguins. The project aims at estimating of overwinter habitat use by three species of Pygoscelis penguins from colonies that are widely distributed across Subarea 48.1 using archival lightbased geolocation (GLS) and ARGOS satellite transmitter tags (PTT). A synoptic estimate of habitat use from multiple localities within Subarea 48.1 is essential for improving our characterizations of predator distributions at sea and estimates of the potential overlap of foraging habitat with important fishing areas. Transmitters were put on juvenile Chinstrap penguins (Pygoscelis Antarctica) and adult Gentoo penguins (Pygoscelis papua)

Remarks / Description: “Arctowski” Station is located on a flat marine gravel terrace 6 m asl and ca 500 meters east of Point Thomas on the western shore of Admiralty Bay on King George Island. The area around the station is ice-free. The station consists of several buildings (living quarters, laboratories, warehouses, power plant, Tourist Information Centre, lighthouse). Fuel tanks (projected for 150 sqm) and the old main fuel tank (in renovation) are situated ca 700 m from the main building. The station is located within the Antarctic Specially Management Area No.1.
