Details/Description: To detect and record significant changes in critical biological components of the ecosystem a whole year program to monitor breeding and non-breeding birds and pinniped species in ASPA No 128 Western Shore of Admiralty Bay, King George Island, South Shetland Islands has been conducted over the past 34 years. Since 2007 monitoring program in ASPA No 151 Lions Rump, King George Island, South Shetland Islands was established by Poland and has been conducted during each Antarctic summer season. This krill-dependent predator monitoring program follows the CCAMLR Ecosystem Monitoring Program (CEMP) standards.

Project Name/Number: Calving as the main component of the mass balance of King George Island ice cap

Main Activity/ Remarks: The main project objective is to provide a full quantitative description of calving of tidewater glaciers on King George Island and subsequently use it to calibrate and verify remote-sensing analysis and mathematical modelling in a larger scale. In order to achieve that goal, a series of terrestrial laser scanning surveys will be conducted, measuring: calving intensity of tidewater glaciers, ice flow velocities of tidewater glaciers, geodetic mass balance of land-terminating glaciers and a hydrological balance of land-terminating glaciers. During January-February 2016 topography of several glaciers and their foregrounds in Admiralty Bay was measured using terrestrial laser scanning.

Project Name/Number: Communities of invertebrates in soil habitat on King George Island, Antarctica

Main Activity/ Remarks: Small invertebrates (Acari, Collembola) belong to the first animals colonizing polar areas after the glacial retreat. They can be also be good bioindicators of environmental changes. Species composition of soil communities enables determining the degree of succession, direction and rate of natural changes. Soil invertebrate communities can also be used to reconstruct the history of colonization of the Antarctica since the end of the last glacial maximum, including the identification of glacial refuges and dispersal pathways into the Antarctica. During January – February 2016 soil invertebrates were extracted from several differing sites of Point Thomas Oasis for future research.

Since 2007 monitoring program in ASPA No 151 Lions Rump, King George Island, South Shetland Islands was established by Poland and has been conducted during each Antarctic summer season. The following CEMP indices were included: penguin breeding population size (number of pairs) (P. adeliae, P. papua, P. antarcticus), breeding success (chick counts) (P. adeliae, P. papua, P. antarcticus), penguin chick weight (g) at fledgling (Procedure A) (P. adeliae), breeding chronology (P. adeliae, P. papua, P. antarcticus). Additionally, the following parameters were recorded: flying birds census and breeding success, spatial and geographic distribution of bird nests, pinniped census and breeding population estimation, records of non-breeding bird species, monitoring of marked birds and pinnipeds, records of whale appearance in King George Bay. Potential impact of UAVs overflights on Adelié penguins (Pygoscelis adeliae), Gentoo penguins (P. papua) and southern giant petrel (Macronectes giganteus) were investigated. Breeding chronology and success of three penguin species (P. adeliae, P. papua, P. antarcticus) were recorded by remote, automated cameras in ASPA No 151 Lions Rump and ASPA No 128 Western Shore of Admiralty Bay (Copacabana, Pt. Thomas, Patelnia) under the multinational (US, Argentine, Australia, Poland, Ukraine) scientific program “Establishing a CEMP Camera Network in Subarea 48.1” (CCAMLR Ecosystem Monitoring Program Proposal to Use CEMP Special Funds).

Project Name/Number: Hydrology of glaciers of the Western shore of the Admiralty Bay

Main Activity/ Remarks: The hydrological monitoring on the selected glaciers located at the West shore of the Admiralty Bay allows calculating the amount of sediment flowing from glaciers and for description of the transport and accumulation in the channels of these glaciers. Measurements will help to determinate the intensity of the fluvial and glacial processes and will be the first attempt to identify the further direction of their changes. During January – March 2016 river bedload traps were installed at the forefield of Baranowski Glacier and used for measuring the intensity of bedload transport, measurements (electromagnetic flowmeter) of water velocity in streams in the same area were done, bathymetric map of the Suszczewski Cove was prepared and the potential sites of outflow of subglacial water were determined.

Project Name/Number: MONICA - A novel approach to monitoring the impact of climate change on Antarctic ecosystems

Main Activity/ Remarks: The aim of the project is to study impact of climate change on Antarctic ecosystem and biodiversity. The program’s detailed objectives are: 1. adapting fixed-wing UAVs, equipped with advanced sensors, to the maritime Antarctic climate, 2. using UAVs for collecting environmental data (digital aerial photographs with application of geo-information tools) on King George Island. Participants: Institute of Biochemistry and Biophysics, Warsaw University of Technology (Poland) and Northern Research Institute (Norway). Eight successful flight missions (total distance 655 km, total flight time 9 hrs) were performed between 10th November and 5th December 2015, covering coastal zone of ASPA No 128, Chabrier Rock and Shag Islands. Almost 18 thousand Pygoscelis penguin nests in six breeding colonies were mapped. Six successful flight missions (total distance about 200 km) were performed between 28th January and 6th February 2016, covering the area between Arctowski Station and Ornithologists Creek, as well as the forefield of the retreating Sphinx Glacier (ASPA No 128). Main vegetation communities in the area were mapped.

Project Name/Number: Monitoring of the structure of the Earth’s electric field from Polish observation stations in the Antarctic, Arctic and central Europe

Main Activity/ Remarks: This project aims at better understanding of the processes and phenomena operating in the Earth’s electric atmosphere and ionosphere. Coordinated observations of atmospheric electricity (the global atmospheric electric circuit, GEC) are done at Polish observational stations: Geophysical Observatory in Swider (Poland: 21.25°E, 52.12°N, geomagnetic latitude ~48°N), Polish Polar Station “Hornsund” (Svalbard, Norway: 15.50°E, 77.00°N, geom. ~74°N), Polish Antarctic Station “Arctowski” (South Shetland Islands: 58.47°W, 62.16°S, geom. ~51°S). The role of the GEC generator that has its source in the solar-wind magnetosphere interaction and the ionospheric convection are studied at different latitudes. Using superDARN radar observations we will reduce the electric data from polar regions for the effects of the ionospheric convection and we will be looking for such effects at mid-latitudes.

Project Name/Number: Multidisciplinary monitoring program in Admiralty Bay (Subarea 48.1), King George Island, South Shetland Islands

Main Activity/ Remarks: Biological, physical, chemical, hydrological and geological studies are carried out for comparison of the contemporary data with the archive data sets. It will allow to estimate how climate change is affecting the functioning of abiotic and biotic elements in Admiralty Bay. During 2015/2016 season marine plankton, seawater and marine sediments were collected from Admiralty Bay, water and sediment samples were taken from streams in Point Thomas Oasis and in the forefield of Ecology Glacier.

Project Name/Number: POROCO - Mechanisms controlling the evolution and geomorphology of rocky coasts in polar climates

Main Activity/ Remarks: The principle aim of the Polar Rock Coasts (POROCO) project is to quantify the processes controlling the evolution and behavior of rock coasts in polar climates, based on representative examples from Svalbard (Arctic) and South Shetlands (Antarctic). POROCO aims to develop predictions of future rock coast change under scenarios of continued increases in air temperature, sea-level rise and the frequency and intensity of storms entering polar seas. During January-February 2016 geomorphological mapping of rocky shores of Admiralty Bay with non-invasive tests of rock surface resistance as well as non-invasive geophysical measurements of rocky shores and sediments (electrical resistivity tomography) were done, sediment samples from contemporary and raised beaches were collected.

Project Name/Number: The causes, course and consequences of the expansion of Poa annua L. in Western Antarctica, a multi-aspect population study

Main Activity/ Remarks: The aim of the project is to analyze causes, course and results of the expansion of Poa annua L. in the vicinity of H. Arctowski Station (South Shetlands, Antarctica). The planned research will allow to evaluate role of the seed bank in the stability of the population, show the morphophysiological, biochemical, genetic and functional features of the species enabling it to become established in the Antarctic, and verify hypothesis regarding the source from which the species was brought into the Antarctic. In 2015/2016 the survey of ice-free areas of ASPA No 128 was repeated, and found seedling of P. annua were removed. Soil samples for the analysis of soil seed bank were collected. Sites with P. annua at the Arctowski Station were mapped, grass clumps were removed, soil samples were collected.

Remarks / Description: “Arctowski” Station is located on a flat marine gravel terrace 6 m asl and ca 500 meters east of Point Thomas on the western shore of Admiralty Bay on King George Island. The area around the station is ice-free. The station consists of several buildings (living quarters, laboratories, warehouses, power plant, Tourist Information Centre, lighthouse). Fuel tanks (projected for 150 sqm) and the old main fuel tank (in renovation) are situated ca 700 m from the main building. The station is located within the Antarctic Specially Management Area No.1.
