Scientific Information - Science Activities in Previous Year
Project Name/Number: ACE - Antarctic Climate Evolution
Discipline: geology
Principal Investigator: Andrzej Tatur (Polish Academy of Sciences Department of Antarctic Biology in Warsaw)
Main Activity/ Remarks: Continuation of rock sampling in the area of Lion’s Rump, Destruction Bay and Mount Wawel surroundings. Main goal of activity: to find evidence of preglacial (Eocene) and glacial (Oligocene-Miocene) climate changes in sedimentary rocks of Mount Wawel Formation, Lion’s Cove Formation, Polonez Cove Formation, Boy Point Formation and Cape Melville Formation and Destruction Bay Formation

Project Name/Number: Comparative biodiversity study of Southern and Arctic Ocean of selected groups of invertebrates as a key for global ecological processes understanding
Discipline: marine biology
Principal Investigator: Piotr Kukliński (Institute of Oceanology Polish Academy of Sciences)
Main Activity/ Remarks: Project focus on encrusting biota from both polar systems: Antarctic and Arctic. Sampels are collected from similar habitat including e.g. substrate, depth what enables direct comparison. Gathered data will allow us to understand how this assemblages are shaped under similar environmental condition yet from habitat of different geological history.

Project Name/Number: Ecological monitoring - long term bird and pinniped observation programme on King Gorge Island.
Discipline: ecology
Principal Investigator: Małgorzata Korczak-Abshire (Polish Academy of Sciences Department of Antarctic Biology in Warsaw)
Main Activity/ Remarks: To detect and record significant changes in critical components of the ecosystem a whole year programme to monitor breeding and non-breeding bird and pinniped species in the Antarctic Specially Protected Area (ASPA) 128 King George Island has been conducted over the past 34 years. Since 2007 monitoring programme on ASPA 151 King George Island was established by Polish observers and has been conducted during each Antarctic summer season. According to CCAMLR standard methods total numbers of nesting birds in colonies are recorded during their breeding seasons. Pinnipeds are counted in their breeding groups in spring and in resting and moulting areas during summer. Data serve as a basis for the conservation of Antarctic marine living resources.
