Details/Description: Decisions regarding selection and financing of projects within the framework of the Norwegian Antarctic Research Expeditions - NARE - 2011-2013 were finalized 2011 and have provided the specific agenda for Norway's research activities in Antarctica. Selected projects have been: *A permanent, broadband, seismic station at the Troll research base: installation, data analysis and interpretation (NORSAR) * Antarctic Ice Shelves and Ocean Climate: Production, Export, Dynamics and Variability of Bottom Water in the Southern Weddell Sea (UiB) * Southern Ocean Variability--Contemporary to Paleo Trends * Response of Antarctic seabirds to a changing environment: from oceanographic conditions to foraging behaviour and demography (NPI) * Launch of controlled meteorological balloons from the Troll research station in Antarctica (met.no) * Geodynamic evolution of the ca. 600-500 Ma East African-Antarctic Orogen in eastern Dronning Maud Land, Antarctica (UiB) * Evolution of ice rises during the late Holocene and implications for mass balance in the Antarctic coastal area (NPI) * Observations of carbon monoxide and ozone in the Antarctic and Arctic: Implications for the inter-hemispheric coupling of vertical motions (NTNU) * Measuring and interpretation of airborne emerging organic pollutants data at the Troll station (NILU). The NARE 2011-2013 is now near completion and new project funding will be announced during 2013 for the NARE 2014-2016 period in accordance with normal procedure.

Details/Description: Norway maintains its long-term commitment of scientific research in Antarctica. The Norwegian Polar Institute as the national coordinator enables Norway to maintain this role from its research and long-term monitoring and survey activities. In addition to NPI, the Norwegian Air Research Institute (NILU) undertakes long-term survey and remote sensing activities in Antarctica. NPI provides the main infrastructure for polar research, maintains the permanent Norwegian presence in Antarctica, and supports international objectives through collaborative scientific and logistic links with many other national programs. As an important contribution for long-term scientific activities is permanently occupied research station Troll.

Details/Description: The Policy for Norwegian polar research 2010–13 was prepared by the Norwegian National Committee on Polar Research for the Research Council of Norway. This is the first time the Research Council has drawn up a document that covers research both in the Arctic, including Svalbard, and in the Antarctic. The policy document has been formulated on the basis of key challenges and opportunities for Norwegian polar research, new trends in the polar regions and Norway’s overall interests in this context. In 2012 The Research Council published the report "Norway’s research activities in the Antarctic 2013-2022", which recommends an increase in Norwegian research acitivity in the Antarctic, particularly on krill and ice sheets.

Scientific Information - Science Activities in Previous Year
Project Name/Number: Response of Antarctic seabirds
Discipline: Biology
Principal Investigator: Sebastién Descamps (NPI)
Main Activity/ Remarks: Changes in sea-ice dynamics are expected to mediate changes in krill abundance and distribution, and influence the entire Antarctic ecosystem. To elucidate the consequences of changes in sea-ice dynamics on top predators such as seabirds is challenging. However, recent technological advances to monitor animal spatial dynamics (e.g., miniaturized global positioning systems), diet (e.g., analyses of stable isotopic ratios) and environmental conditions (e.g., remote sensing of sea-ice cover) now offer the potential to address such questions. The IceBird project (2011-2014) aims to combine detailed individual monitoring of Antarctic petrels spatial dynamics, diet and demography using cutting edge technology and modeling to assess and predict how this seabird responds to changes in sea-ice dynamics. The research is taking place at the Svarthamaren Antarctic petrel colony, which is the largest known inland seabird colony on the Antarctic; this colony constitutes a large portion of the global population of Antarctic petrels. This project will improve our understanding of the functional processes of the Southern Ocean ecosystem and of the impact of climatic changes on Antarctic seabirds.

Project Name/Number: A permanent, broadband, seismic station at the Troll research base: installation, data analysis and interpretation
Discipline: Seismology
Principal Investigator: Johannes Schweitzer (NORSAR)
Main Activity/ Remarks: The permanent broadband seismic station at Troll was established and put into operation in early 2012. all data are transferred in real time via a satellite link to NORSAR for analysis and further distributed to the European data center ORFEUS, where they can be accessed by the whole seismological community.

Project Name/Number: Atmospheric research and monitoring at Troll: a long-term observational program.
Discipline: Atmospheric chemistry
Principal Investigator: Norwegian Institute for Air Research
Main Activity/ Remarks: The Troll Atmospheric Station in Antarctica was established and put into operation in early 2007. The main foci of the measurement programme are pollution and aerosols in the transition zone between the coastal zone and the inland ice plateau, complementing existing observation programmes along the Antarctic coast and on the Antarctic Plateau.

Project Name/Number: Evolution of ice rises during the late Holocene
Discipline: Geophysics
Principal Investigator: Kenichi Matsuoka (NPI)
Main Activity/ Remarks: “ICE RISES” was started June 2011 to investigate grounded ice masses (ice rises), such as isles and promontories surrounded by ice shelves in the vicinity of Fimbul ice shelf. During the 2011-12 and 12-13 field seasons, three ice rises were investigated using geodetic GPS and ice-penetrating radar techniques. Summits of these ice rises are 200-300 m higher than the ice-shelf surface, and the grounded ice maintains its own local flow field. The key findings, so far, include upward arches (Raymond Bumps) underneath the ice-rise summits, evidence of the stability of these ice rises over millennia, and downward arches near the grounding line, inferring large sub-shelf melting localized at the grounding line.

Permit Period: From:  01 Dec 2012   To:  25 Feb 2013
Purpose: To conduct research (within the framework of hte Norwegian Antarctic Research Expeditons) with a primary objective to understand how interactions between changes in oceanographic conditions (and in particular sea-ice dynamics) and foraging behaviour affect Antarctic seabird demography and their population dynamics. The project is a part of the primary research allowed for through the management plan for the area.
Summary of activities: Ringing, blood sampling and fitting of gps on a number of Antarctic petrel, snow petrel and south polar skua. Separate permit is required for this activity. The project has three field seasons, and similar permits for activities in the ASPA will be required in the two next austral summer season. Note that the permit is for max 4 people entering the ASPA at the time, but covers 4-6 individuals per season.
