Permit Period: From:  20 Sep 2012   To:  31 Oct 2013
Purpose: Science research
Summary of activities: We installed a passive radio receiver (the AARDDVARK/WWLLN VLF receiver) during event K069a in December 2008. It consists of a mast to hold up two perpendicular loop antenna, a pre-amplifier box at the base of the mast, a cable running from this box to the Arrival Heights laboratory, where there are a small collection of electronics plus a computer to do the logging. The experiment has been continuously returning radio wave measurements since we left Antarctica, and we have had no issues. Assuming this system continues to operate (as it has to date), our visit will have the following goals. 1. examine the existing equipment for wear and tear, especially the parts of the antenna and mast subject to mechanical forces in the high winds. 2. repair or replace any parts which have been damaged or weakened. This has been necessary in previous seasons. 3. transfer spares to the AH lab to allow field repairs by Scott Base technical staff. 4. remove high time resolution data which cannot be sent back to NZ using the existing network connections (due to band width limitations). 5. calibrate the antenna 6. Undertake local surveys of electromagnetic noise – try and understand local sources. If time permits, we could test the use of portable equipment and investigate if other low noise sites are available in the region. 7. update the operating system of the existing computer (which cannot be done across the network due to band width limitations).

This work is to be undertaken as the previous map of the facilities at Arrival Heights was produced in the late 1980s. Since this time a new lab has been established, and several antennas have been moved. LINZ has undertaken some work at Arrival Heights in the past two seasons, and this proposed work would complete this work.

Permit Number: K016 12/13
Number of people permitted: 4
Permit Period: From:  20 Sep 2012   To:  31 Oct 2013
Purpose: Science research
Summary of activities: The field activity will involve a ground survey, on foot, of the Cape Crozier region. The purpose of the survey is to locate and map abandoned Adelie penguin nesting sites and relict colonies at this location. At selected sites we will dig pits in order to collect Adélie Penguin remains (penguin bones, eggshells, dietary remains, guano), ornithogenic soils and sediments. Using techniques common in archaeological research, an accurate stratigraphic excavation will be undertaken to identify the periods of occupations, and to reconstruct the history of penguin populations at that site. Pits from 0.5 to 2 m2 will be dug. As material is excavated it will be placed on a ground sheet so that it can used to refill the pit. At the completion of the excavation the pits will be filled with material that was originally excavated. This method will allow us to identify and separate individual remains within the same layer. After collection, sub-fossil bone samples will be placed in a plastic bag, labeled and stored frozen, until returned to the laboratory where they will be kept at -80°C.
