Operational Information - National Expeditions - Military
Military personnel in expeditions: HMNZS Wellington – Offshore Patrol Vessel (OPV) of the Royal New Zealand Navy. Ice Class 1C. 57 NZ Defence Force employees, 1 Ministry of Fisheries Officer and 1 Civilian Contractor. Key personnel: Commanding Officer: Lieutenant Commander Simon Griffiths; Executive Officer: Lieutenant Layamon Bakewell; Engineering Officer: Lieutenant Matt Penny; Trials Officer: Lieutenant Matt Lee; Ice Navigation Consultant: Captain Andrew Leechman.
Number and Type of Armaments possessed by personnel: Personnel small arms protection equipment. No small arms will be taken ashore.
Number and Type of Armaments of ships and aircraft: HMNZS Wellington carries one 25 mm. No helicopter will be embarked.
Information and Location of Military Equipment in the AT Area: HMNZS Wellington is voyaging to the Southern Ocean as part of sea trials to test its operational capability in heavy sea and light ice conditions. HMNZS Wellington is expected to cross into Antarctic waters on 17 February, and will enter the Ross Sea on 18 February. Once within the Ross Sea , HMNZS Wellington will passage south to the Ross Ice Shelf and then west into McMurdo Sound . HMNZS Wellington will attempt a landing at Cape Bird and either Cape Royds or Cape Evans . The ship will then attempt a landing at Franklin Island , before passaging north up the Victoria Land coast (western Ross Sea ), attempting further landings at Cape Hallett and Cape Adare . A key part of these trials is the development of a capability to land and recover small groups of personnel along the coastline of Antarctica . Permits have been issued to enter ASPAs 106, 155, 157, and 159. The HMNZS Wellington is expected to depart the Treaty Area on 28 Feb.
