Remarks / Description: Marcel Nicolaus, AWI: The wintering team measures various sea ice and snow properties (mainly) between June and January (see map), when safe access to the ice is possible. Manual measurements of sea ice thickness, freeboard, and snow thickness (drillings and stake measurements) are repeated along a 25km-long transect across Atka Bay every 2 to 3 weeks. In addition, autonomous stations are operated on the sea ice. From those, we retrieve continuous measurements of snow and sea-ice thickness and temperatures as well as atmospheric conditions from an automatic weather station. These routine measurements are occasionally complemented by more extensive sea-ice thickness and snow depth transects, using an electromagnetic thickness probe (EM31) pulled in a kayak by a snow mobile. At the end of the sea ice season, before the expected break out, sea ice cores are retrieved and shipped back to Bremerhaven for analyses. During the field season in 2014/15, additional sea ice work will be carried out as part of the Polarstern expedition ANT XXX/2, which will also supply the Neumayer III base end of December 2014. The work during this time will intensify the monitoring activities and set up new instrumentation for test purposes: 1) Manual measurements of ice thickness, freeboard, and snow thickness (drillings and stake measurements) on the sea ice of Atka Bay along the AFIN East-West profile. Sampling of sea ice by taking ice cores along this transect. The samples will be transferred to the freezer lab on Polarstern. 2) Maintenance of existing autonomous measurement platforms of the AFIN project (sea ice and snow buoys). 3 )Installation of a high-precision GPS station close to the Neumayer III met field. 4) Investigations of the layer of ice platelets under the sea ice with an remotely operated vehicle (ROV). If possible, those measurements will be performed in Atka Bay, but most likely closer to Polarstern than the main AFIN transect.

Remarks / Description: Alexander Chouker (University of Munich) Hanns-Christian Gunga (University of Berlin, Charité): Project topic and goals The goals of the planned project can be summarized as follows:  1) Assessment and understanding of stress-associated immune changes that result from confinement living and/or under mild hypobaric hypoxia comparable to the living situation in future lunar habitats where air pressure and oxygen may be lowered for technical reasons.  2) Workout for the rationale for the development of adequate countermeasures to counterbalance the potential risk of confinement and hypoxia-induced immune and health changes  Deliverables  During wintering over, blood, saliva, and urine collection occurred before and after the mission as well as during the isolation period. The immune tests included e.g. peripheral leucocyte distribution, innate and adaptive immunocyte functions when challenged with receptor dependent or independent agents as well as the Herpes virus replications as a marker of immune dysfunction. Complementary stress questionnaires will be assessed.

Remarks / Description: The station is operated as an annex station to the General Bernardo O’Higgins station (Chile). The location was selected because of its excellent conditions regarding infrastructure, bedrock foundation, and access. The station is in operation 90-120 days throughout the year for data acquisition campaigns. The focus is on Antarctic summertime, when it is possible to obtain ground measurements for reference purposes, as well as to exchange personnel and magnetic tape data carriers, and bring in supplies and replacement parts. Transportation and logistics are coordinated with the Chilean Antarctic Programme using ships and aircraft.

Remarks / Description: PI Gert König-Langlo (AWI) Established in season 2002/03, the meteorological observatory of the German Antarctic station Neumayer offered a detailed and individual weather forecast service for all activities in Dronning Maud Land. This service is performed in close cooperation between the Alfred-Wegener-Institute for Polar and Marine Research (AWI) and the German Weather Service (DWD). During the summer season 2013/2014 several thousand forecasts get performed for field parties, ships, stations and especially aircrafts. It is obvious, that this service increased the safeness of the ambiguous projects in the Dronning Maud Land. Furthermore, it helps to reduce weather induced idle times of expensive flight operations to a minimum. The service will start again in November 2014.

Remarks / Description: PI Rolf Weller (AWI) The main objective of our planned air chemistry research activities is to initiate a periodic intensive aerosol measuring program during summer campaigns at the EPICA drilling site in Dronning Maud Land (Kohnen Station, 75°00'S, 0°04'E). Up to now previous results from this site were restricted to the bulk chemical (ionic) composition of the aerosol, obtained during four summer campaigns and four year-round aerosol sampling by an automated aerosol sampler. Our intended new initiative will now concentrate on the dynamics of particle concentration and particle size distribution as well as on size segregated aerosol sampling. Such investigations in continental Antarctica are dedicated to complement and expand the research program already established at the coastal Neumayer Station. In general, the influence of atmospheric particles on climate, ecosystems and human health is beyond doubt but measurements in pristine regions to quantify emissions from natural and anthropogenic sources as well as the transport- and deposition processes are still incomplete. In particular, the composition of aerosol particles is determined by chemical and physical processes occurring during particle generation and transport. In order to assess the source apportionment, long range transport, and deposition, it is necessary to characterize relevant physical and chemical aerosol properties, which is the main goal of our research program. Finally, our results also assist the interpretation of chemical tracer profiles measured in firn and ice cores (e.g. the EPICA-DML ice core). As for the aerosol sampling program, we plan to install one low-volume aerosol sampler and a Berner type impactor during Kohnen summer campaigns, starting in 2015/2016. Aerosol samples are dedicated for ion chromatography (IC, ions to be determined: Cl-, SO42-, NO3-, methane sulfonate, Na+, K+, Mg2+, Ca2+, and NH4+), and for element (with ICP-MS = Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectroscopy) analyses. Furthermore a scanning mobility particle sizer (SMPS) will be implemented to measure particle size distributions in the range between 5 nm and 200 nm or alternatively from 2.5 nm to 150 nm. These measurements will be completed by condensation particle (CP) measurements, capturing the total particle number concentration between 4 nm and 3.5 µm. The latter instruments have been successfully operated for several years at Neumayer Station.

Remarks / Description: PI Christoph Held (AWI) Due to their high abundance, the amphipod scavenging guild has a key role in Antarctic food webs, both as food source for higher trophic levels and as recyclers of organic matter (Dauby et al 2001, De Broyer et al 2004). However, there is so far only scarce knowledge on their ecological role, trophic dynamics and vulnerability towards current and future environmental changes. These changes are particularly apparent in the Potter Cove (PC), which is exposed to an increasing freshwater inflow and sedimentary run-off due to glacier melt. The first objective of the proposed field and laboratory studies is to estimate the biomass and taxonomic diversity of scavenging amphipods along a transect of different benthic habitat types in the PC using baited traps. Secondly, we aim to investigate the ecological role and behaviour of scavenging amphipods attracted to bait by measuring feeding and succession rates in the field as well as in laboratory experiments. Thirdly, we will quantify the importance of scavenging lysianassoids by exclusion experiments in the field, comparing decomposition rates of fish bait with and without exposure to lysianassoids. Our experiments will allow us to estimate the ecological value of scavenging amphipods as a controlling instance of nutrient turnover in the PC food web. Our experiments will form the baseline for future experiments that will focus on the response of lysianassoid amphipods to changing conditions (pH, temperature) in laboratory experiments. In close cooperation with Dr. Esteban Barrera-Oros and his ichthyology group (Instituto Antártico Argentino and CONICET, Buenos Aires, Argentina) we will investigate the mutual relation of lysianassoid amphipods and local fish as prey and food source. Together with Prof. Fernando Momo (Universidad Nacional de General Sarmiento, Instituto de Ciencias, Argentina) we will develop a first model that aims to better understand the abundance and trophic importance of the lysianassoid amphipods in Potter Cove.

Remarks / Description: Sepp Kipfstuhl, AWI: CoFi investigates the evolution of the snow pack, the firnification and the air entrapment in ice on the Antarctic Plateau, the relationship between impurities and microstructure, how the seasonal climatic and environmental signals develop under the depositional conditions at Kohnen and how the radiation properties (e.g. albedo) of the snow are linked to the microstructure of the snow. Snow samples for isotopes and impurities will be taken during the entire field season. Project topic and goals Project topic is the effect of snow deposition on the formation of the seasonal signals in the firn and the microstructural properties of the snow from the surface to the firn-ice transition. A special topic during this season is the evolution of the isotopic cycle in the top few meters (last 20 years) and its relationship to the air temperature measured at the automatic weather station set up 1998. At Kohnen one goal is a comprehensive snow sampling program performed at various locations (5 or more; daily samples; top 1-3 m; entire season) in the close vicinity of Kohnen Station to find out how the summer signals form and develop over the summer season at the different sampling locations. A second goal is the variability of the isotopic signal directly at the surface (top 5 cm) to learn more about the processes affecting the isotopes in surface snow.

This mission aims on the investigation of the polar regions, especially to infer ice surface heights, the thickness of marine ice and to contribute to the study of ice mass changes. For the calibration and validation terrestrial and airborne observation campaigns are planned. While AWI Bremerhaven focuses on airborne operations, TU Dresden will record ground-based GNSS data at bare ice (“blue ice”) areas south of Schirmacher Oasis. These data will be processed in close cooperation with AWI geophysics (CryoVex campaign) and will serve as a sound basis for the calibration and validation of CRYOSAT-2.

Remarks / Description: PI Hans-Ulrich Peter (Uni Jena) First project: A satellite based quantification of changes in penguin colonies is in need of high-quality ground-truthing data. For larger colonies (up to 150.000 breeding pairs) quantities census data can only be obtained by helicopter/airplane overflights, by panorama photography or by extrapolation of control samples. We will use UAVs to provide a precise and efficient method to map penguin colonies even of larger size. By generating high resolution Digital Surface Models (DSM) as well, a more precise orthorectification of satellite images is possible. Aim of the project “Current environmental situation and management proposals for the Fildes Peninsula Region” is the continuation of an updated standardized assessment of fauna and flora of the Fildes Peninsula and Ardley Island with focus on birds and seals. Within this project the monitoring of penguins (Pygoscelis spec.) and Southern Giant Petrels (Macronectes giganteus) will be continued. The first aim of the project “Population ecology and migration of Antarctic Skuas” on Fildes Peninsula is the continuation of the long-term project on the population ecology of both skua species and hybrid pairs.

Remarks / Description: PI Gerhard Kuhn (AWI) One of the aims of the project, supported by IMCONet, focuses on the recognition of the glacial geology of the subaerial environment of the South Shetland Islands and its correlation with bathymetric records and proxies from marine cores, thus complementing the marine geological work, mainly in offshore areas of the island, which is carried out in the Alfred Wegener Institute, Helmholtz Zentrum (AWI). Analytics on field collected samples will be held in Germany. The planned field work consists in: -Crono-stratigraphic (14C dating) profiling and facies analysis of each vertical section and its relationship to the surrounding geomorphology. -It is also planned get samples from suitable glacigenic facies for Optically Stimulated Luminescence (OSL) dating. -Transverse sections along the present beach, to get a continuum profile of raised beaches altitudes. -Take sediment samples in each facies profiles from new and previously vertical ones for clast morphology and textural analyses. Samples for geochemistry is planned to do in marine facies.

Remarks / Description: PI Rolf Weller (AWI) Apart from the routine measuring program established at the Air Chemistry Observatory, a so-called ToF-ACSM (Time of Flight Aerosol Speciation Monitor) from the Finnish Meteorological Institute (FMI, PI: Risto Hillamo) is planned to be installed during the forthcoming summer campaign (2014/2015) for one season. With this instrument we aim at a chemical speciation of the aerosol, in particular concerning organic compounds. For the first time such a highly sophisticated instrument will be operated throughout a year in Antarctica. Primarily for the characterization of organic aerosol compounds, this experiment has to be regarded as a feasibility study due to the expected extremely low concentration levels. Our scientific summer activities will further focus on aerosol size distribution measurements within the nucleation mode. In addition we intend to continue size distribution measurements during austral late winter / spring. On-going particle concentration observations indicate particle nucleation processes even during this season, an up to now unexplained peculiarity. After overhaul, an ozone monitor will be re-installed during the forthcoming summer campaign. Finally, there will be the usual maintenance operation at the Air Chemistry Observatory as well as training of the new air chemistry over-winterer Bettina Nekat.

Remarks / Description: PI: Daniel Zitterbart (AWI) This project aims to understand the reorganization process in penguin huddles and the implications for social thermoregulation. We will install a remote-operated penguin observatory including hard- and software for fast image acquisition and real-time processing. The observatory will be capable of detecting the whole huddle, as well as tracking the movements of thousands of individual penguins throughout the winter. An accurate count of animals within the colony and the size of individual animals will also be recorded, and together our data will help to estimate how the increasing environmental strain such as ongoing climate changes, thinning sea ice and reduced krill availability, is affecting Emperor penguins.

These datasets are complemented by in-situ date including DGPS surveys, surface mass balance measurements and time lapse cameras photos as well as survey flights with airborne laser altimetry and ground penetrating radar (by AWI Polar-6). Main target areas are the tributaries draining into the former Larsen-A Ice Shelf, Prince Gustav Channel and areas on the Western Antarctic Peninsula covered by TanDEM-X.

Remarks: PI Olaf Boebel Polarstern will depart from Cape Town, South Africa, on 2 December 2014 for the 2nd leg of its 30th Antarctic expedition PS89 (ANT-XXX/2). First, she will head west-southwestward along the so called Good Hope Section (following the ground track of Topex/Jason track # 133). Reaching 0°E near 51°S, the expedition will continue southwards along the Greenwich Meridian Section towards the Antarctic ice shelf, which will be reached near 69°S, just before Christmas. Heading eastwards, a port call at Neumayer Station is scheduled for 25 December 2014, to provide the German overwintering station with provisions. Thereafter, research activities will be continued across the Weddell Sea towards the tip of the Antarctic Peninsula (the Weddell Sea Crossing). Around 30 January, research activities will come to a close near Elephant Island. The expedition will end in Punta Arenas, Chile, on 1 February 2015. The cruise track is shown in Fig. 1.1. HAFOS (PI Boebel), the physical oceanography core project, intends to investigate the role of the Southern Ocean in the global climate system with focus on the Atlantic sector, including the Weddell Sea. To this end, temperature, salinity and ocean currents will be measured continuously along the cruise track and 28 profiling NEMO (Navigating European Marine Observer) floats shall be deployed at selected locations. Providing the backbone of our long-term Weddell Sea Observatory, totals of 35 and 16 of deep-sea moorings will be recovered and redeployed during the expedition, respectively. These moorings consist of single pressure sensor equipped inverted echosounders (PIES), which are used along Good Hope Section and the northern part of the Greenwich Meridian Section, or more complex structures which contain current meters, temperature and conductivity sensors, sound sources and sound recorders (Greenwich Meridian Section and Weddell Sea Crossing). Deep water casts using a CTD (Conductivity, Temperature, Depth) probe and rosette sampler will occur at approximately 50 hydrographic stations and water samples will be taken to determine the concentration of salt and oxygen. The Carbon System of the Weddell Sea project (PI González-Dávila) will use these water samples to determine three variables of the carbonate system at selected depth of the water column: pH, total alkalinity and dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC). Moreover, a continuous underway xCO2 sensor will measure the partial pressure of CO2 in the surface water following the ship trajectory. The SOCCOM (Southern Ocean Carbon and Climate Observations and Modelling, PI Talley) project aims for sustained observations of the carbon cycle by deploying 180 to 200 autonomous profiling floats with biogeochemical sensors (oxygen, nitrate, pH and optical sensors in addition to temperature/salinity) throughout the Southern Ocean. A total of 15 to 17 SOCCOM floats will be deployed throughout this expedition at locations of CTD/rosette sampling in order to collect water samples (to be analysed for oxygen, nutrients, pH, alkalinity, HPLC, POC) for float profile calibration. The Sea Ice Physics and Ecology Study (SIPES, PI Flores) is designed as an inter-disciplinary field study focussing on the inter-connection of sea ice physics, sea ice biology, biological oceanography and top predator ecology. SIPES aims to collect inter-disciplinary data sets from two to three selected areas along the cruise track in order to describe the state of sea ice coverage in the observation area. One constituent of SIPES, the sea ice project, aims for an improved understanding of how physical properties and processes of sea ice impact sea ice habitats at different spatio-temporal scales. Key elements are airborne measurements of sea ice thickness with the EM-Bird (electromagnetic) system. Surveys with a remotely operated vehicle (ROV) will be used to map sea ice and water properties on floe scales, focusing on the quantification of optical properties of sea ice and finally the amount of sunlight transmitted through the ice. Observation results of different scales will be used to test our ability to interpret and validate satellite data. Furthermore, the combination with SAR data will allow gaining additional knowledge about sea ice deformation and dynamical properties. We complement these observations with ice station work to obtain physical properties of snow and sea ice, deployments of autonomous stations (buoys), and along-track ice observations from the bridge. A second core objective of SIPES is to investigate the association of under-ice fauna with sea ice properties and other environmental parameters and to quantify the trophic importance of ice algal carbon for these organisms. On transects from open water into closed pack-ice and back, a Surface and Under-Ice Trawl (SUIT) will be used to quantify the distribution of animals in the immediate ice-water interface layer or at the open surface. The SUIT will be equipped with a bio-environmental sensor array allowing real-time measurements of sea ice properties and water column parameters during trawling. A Multiple-opening Rectangular Midwater Trawl (M-RMT) will be used to assess the species and size composition of animals at different depth strata. The distribution of zooplankton and fish in deeper water layers will be monitored en-route using Polarstern’s EK60 echosounder. Last but not least, ice algal samples obtained with corers as well as biological samples taken from the nets and phytoplankton samples will be collected for trophic biomarker analysis. These biomarkers will later allow quantifying the flux of carbon originating from ice algae versus carbon originating from phytoplankton into the pelagic food web. Top-predator censuses will allow quantifying top predator abundance and distribution in direct comparison to prey distribution and abundance as assessed by net catches and acoustics. Additional dedicated cetacean sighting surveys (PI Herr) will be conducted from the ship’s crow’s nest as well as the helicopters following distance sampling methodology. The surveys aim to contribute to base line data on cetacean occurrence and abundance, especially of Antarctic minke whales (Balaenoptera bonaerensis), with respect to sea-ice concentrations. In addition behavioural observations by means of focal follows shall investigate response behaviour of cetaceans towards vessels in Antarctic waters. TRACEMETAL (PI Wollenburg) will use analyses on trace metal (Mg/Ca, U/Ca, B/Ca) ratios recorded in tests of foraminifers to estimate calcification temperatures, salinity variations, carbonate ion saturation, pH and alkalinity. During this expedition we will retrieve multiple corers from 1500m water depth and transfer the retrieved sediments into newly developed high-pressure aquaria in Bremerhaven to establish species-specific trace metal calibration curves for the Antarctic Ocean.

Remarks: COMPLETE CANCELLATION in advance, due to damage of the vessel Karsten Gohl, AWI: The main research program of the RV Polarstern expedition PS90 (formerly ANT-XXX/3) is aimed to use the MeBo seabed drilling system to drill a series of up to 70 m long sediment cores from the oldest to the youngest sedimentary sequences of the Amundsen Sea Embayment shelf. These cores will provide material for analyses to help reconstructing the development and past dynamics of the WAIS in the Amundsen Sea sector. The drill locations lie primarily along the central glacial troughs of Pine Island Bay and in front of the Pine Island Glacier. Further cores will be recovered from grounding zone wedges in order to understand the processes that controlled ice retreat following the last glacial maximum. Ideal drill locations have already been identified through existing seismic profiles, but further seismic surveying will be necessary for improved regional imaging of the drilled sedimentary sequences. In addition to the MeBo drilling program, we plan to conduct conventional sediment coring, geothermal heat flow measurements at the seafloor, bathymetric mapping and sub-bottom profiling. Two groups will collect rock samples on the main land and islands of Pine Island Bay for thermochronological analyses to study crustal uplift processes, and conduct GPS measurements for the calculation of regional glacial-isostatic motion. Both land-based projects will be supported by helicopters. The expedition will begin on 4th February 2015 in Punta Arenas, will first go to the southern Chilean continental margin to collect up to three sediment cores, and will then continue directly to the main work area of the Amundsen Sea Embayment and Pine Island Bay. After the completion of the geoscientific program, the ship will return to Punta Arenas on 16th March 2015.
