Remarks / Description: The station is operated as an annex station to the General Bernardo O’Higgins station (Chile). The location was selected because of its excellent conditions regarding infrastructure, bedrock foundation, and access. The station is in operation 90-120 days throughout the year for data acquisition campaigns. The focus is on Antarctic summertime, when it is possible to obtain ground measurements for reference purposes, as well as to exchange personnel and magnetic tape data carriers, and bring in supplies and replacement parts. Transportation and logistics are coordinated with the Chilean Antarctic Programme using ships and aircraft.

Remarks / Description: Dr. Hans-Ulrich Peter Aim of the project “Monitoring of the impacts of climate change, research, logistics and tourism on the assets of the ice-free areas of the Maxwell Bay (King George Island, Antarctic)” is the continuation of an updated standardized assessment of fauna and flora of the Fildes Peninsula and the surrounded islands with focus on birds and seals. Any considerable environmental changes will be analyzed to keep the scientific data base up to date and usable. Within this project the monitoring of penguins (Pygoscelis spec.) and Southern Giant Petrels (Macronectes giganteus) will be continued. The first aim of the project “Population ecology and migration of Antarctic Skuas” on Fildes Peninsula is the continuation of the long-term project on the population ecology of both skua species and hybrid pairs.

Remarks / Description: Dr. Sepp Kipfstuhl / Dr. Gerit Birnbaum The overall goal of the sub-project CoFi-Met is to improve prognostic snow models and parameterizations of snow albedo used in regional and global climate models. To achieve this goal we will couple airborne remote sensing measurements (spatial variability) over Dronning Maud Land to ground based in situ measurements (temporal variability) at Kohnen Station. Ground based measurements will include spectral and broadband surface albedo, bidirectional reflectivity, surface roughness, snow temperature profile, black carbon content in the snow and atmospheric quantities like temperature, humidity, wind speed and wind direction. The specific surface area of snow will be measured within the project CoFi. Based on the measurements and investigations with radiative transfer and snow models, our goal is to check whether existing prognostic snow models can be used to forecast variations in snow albedo and bidirectional reflectivity on the Antarctic plateau.

Remarks / Description: Dr. Horst Bornemann The project involves assessment of at-sea movements of southern elephant seal males from King George Island (KGI) using satellite telemetry. It aims to describe (1) the physical environments passed by the seals during their foraging migrations at sea, and (2) their behavioral responses to the oceanographic features they experience with (3) special emphasis on the region of the Filchner Trough System around 79°S 36°W. The Filchner Outflow System is also in the focus of RV Polarstern’s expedition ANT-XXIX/9 and the expedition SAF of AWI’s research aircraft Polar 6, and both are scheduled in synchrony with our work at the Dallmann Laboratory / Carlini Station for 2013/14.

Remarks / Description: D. Zitterbart, AWI The aim of this study is to understand how iconic Antarctic species, such as Emperor penguins and Weddell seals, have responded to past climate changes. Molecular tools are used to seek genetic signatures of populations from breeding locations around the Antarctic continent to detect past breeding refuges. This enables us to understand how today's populations arose from those refugia. Genetic data will also be used to understand migration and genetic diversity in present-day populations. From this knowledge we can predict the fate of those species under future climate change scenarios, their ability to adapt to new environmental conditions, and can assess the risk of local or widespread extinction. To achieve the aims of this project we require samples of Emperor penguins and Weddell seals from colonies and breeding areas from around the Antarctic continent. The samples are to be collected only from rom emperor penguin chicks and Weddell seal pups that died of natural causes.

Remarks / Description: Ed Butler, Tina Sanderfeld Despite evidence for distribution shifts of single species (Perry et al. 2005) and ecosystem changes as a reaction to global warming (Schofield et al. 2010), little is known about the underlying processes. Most animals are highly adapted to the specific conditions met in their natural habitat (Clarke & Johnston 1996). As a consequence of warming waters in the Southern Ocean, shifts in species distribution are expected with sub-Antarctic species migrating southward to high-Antarctic waters, while species from temperate regions might intrude sub-Antarctic areas. Species distribution and abundance are driven by reproduction and growth. Growth and reproduction depend upon surplus energy being available after baseline costs of maintenance have been met. However, interdependencies of temperature changes and energy budgets of single species have rarely been investigated. The aim of this project is to quantify energy allocation of fish species from northern and southern Antarctic regions at different temperatures. Therefore, energy intake from food as well as energy expenditure for growth, reproduction, excretion and maintenance will be measured. Temperature dependent energy allocation helps to determine the sensitivity of a species to a changing environment and to understand distribution limits of different Antarctic fish species as well as distribution shifts in response to climate change. As a species from northern Antarctic regions, specimen of the yellowfin notie (Lepidonotothen nudifrons), were caught during Polarstern cruise ANTXXVIII-3, brought to Germany by ship and experiments were carried out in the AWI’s cold water aquaria in Bremerhaven. A comparable high- Antarctic fish species will be caught in the Ross Sea in October 2013 during an expedition to New Zealand’s Antarctic station ‘Scott Base’ and live fish will be transported to Christchurch, where experiments will be carried out in cold water aquaria of the University of Canterbury. This collaboration between Dr. Miles Lamare from the University of Otago, Prof. Bill Davison from the University of Canterbury and Tina Sandersfeld (PhD student) from the Alfred Wegener Institute are expected to result in quantification of energy budgets of two comparable fish species from northern and southern Antarctic regions. Analysis of possible differences of energy allocation at different temperatures could help to assess the impact of increasing temperature on changes in production as well as potential shifts in distribution ranges due to global warming. Remarks / Description: Horst Bornemann Adult southern elephant seal males of the colony “Stranger Point” on King George Island / Isla 25 de Mayo were instrumented with ARGOS satellite transmitters in 2000 and 2010 to study their foraging migrations. Seals either remained in the area of the Bransfield Strait, or travelled on extended latitudinal gradients to the Bellingshausen, Scotia, or Weddell Sea. All seals tracked over long periods showed extended residence times at circumscribed at-sea locations, considered as foraging hotspots. These spots were widely distributed within the aforementioned seas and coincide with bathymetric features such as slopes, plateaus and seamounts, or particular hydrographic features such as the Filchner Outflow System in the Southern Weddell Sea. Here the outflow of ice shelf water of the Filchner Ronne Ice Shelf interacts with warm deep water of the Weddell Gyre circulation. This interaction is supposed to be the primary cause that converts this area in a biological hotspot where upper and intermediate trophic level interactions are maximised. The Filchner Outflow System is in the focus of RV Polarstern’s expedition ANT-XXIX/9 and the expedition SAF of AWI’s research aircraft Polar 6, and both are scheduled in synchrony with our work at the Dallmann Laboratory / Carlini Station for 2013/14. The current campaign aims for a re-instrumentation of adult males to investigate whether they continue to travel to similar areas and to obtain higher resolution data in combination with in situ sampling of blood and tissue for analyses of the seals‘ prey spectrum. Our work includes up to 20 new deployments of satellite transmitters on adult southern elephant seal males of the Stranger Point colony (ASPA 132) at the end of the breeding season (November). Males that return to Stranger Point for their annual moult will shed of their devices along the beaches of ASPA 132 and will become subject to a repeated deployment (April) in order to cover a full year data set. A subset of 10 animals will be instrumented with CTD-combined ARGOS satellite-relayed dive loggers that have the capabilities to record also in situ water temperature and conductivity for the entire migrations of tracked seals. Such data are of suitable quality to characterise the oceanographic settings utilised by seals. Given that instrumented seals travel towards the region of the Filchner Outflow System, the immediate in situ data on the seals' foraging depths in the area can be used to align the trawl depths of the fishing gear on board RV Polarstern in order to get information on the seals’ prey. The reconciliation of data on the seals' diving behaviour and on the hydrographic features with information on the occurrence and biomass of the seals' prey aims to describe the upper trophic level interactions in detail. The transmitters will be glued to the fur of seals using quick setting epoxy resin. For the purpose of instrumentation, seals will be anaesthetized. The length and girth of each seal will be measured. The mass of the seal will be determined in a post hoc calculation via photogrammetry. On top of the instrumentation, a blood sample will be taken together with blubber, hair and whisker samples. Blood samples will be centrifuged, separated in red blood cells and serum and both deep frozen at -80°C. Within the serum fraction we aim to analyse for prey specific biomarker proteins that allow for reconciliation with the seals' prey spectrum (e.g. octopine in octopods, specific amines in fishes, homarines in molluscs and crustaceans) in later laboratory analyses. These data can hint at the recent prey spectrum within a couple of days prior to blood sampling using both serum and blood cell fractions. Blubber samples will be taken as biopsy and deep frozen at -80°C, and, together with hair and whisker samples, used to get retrospective information on the prey spectra on intermediate time scales up to a couple of months by means of component-specific analyses of fatty acids and isotopes. Remarks / Description: A circular anomaly was found in recent airborne magnetic surveys approximately 10 km SSW of Neumayer Station, Ekstrøm shelf ice, Antarctica. The signature and position, together with further coast parallel oriented anomalies and dipping reflector sequences found in seismic data suggest a volcanic origin of this anomaly. Intensive volcanism in this region took place during the continental breakup of Gondwana ~130 Ma years ago. Hence this circular anomaly can probably be interpreted as the eroded remnants of an ancient volcano. To further investigate the crustal structure beneath the volcano, seismic stations have already been deployed in the beginning of 2013 and additional ground based magnetic and gravimetric profiles are going to be recorded in the Antarctic summer 2013/14 in the project NM Volcano MagGrav. Magnetic profiles from different heights can be used to estimate depth and shape of the source rocks causing the magnetic anomaly. Gravimetric data can reveal density and therefore material differences between the volcano and the surrounding crust. Combining the data of all those geophysical disciplines should yield a good model of the local crustal structure and lead to more insights into volcanic processes during the continental breakup.

Remarks / Description: Daniel Zitterbart This project aims to understand the reorganization process in penguin huddles and the implications for social thermoregulation. We will install a remote-operated penguin observatory including hard- and software for fast image acquisition and real-time processing. The observatory will be capable of detecting the whole huddle, as well as tracking the movements of thousands of individual penguins throughout the winter. An accurate count of animals within the colony and the size of individual animals will also be recorded, and together our data will help to estimate how the increasing environmental strain such as ongoing climate changes, thinning sea ice and reduced krill availability, is affecting Emperor penguins.

Schröder (AWI) The marine vicinities of the Filchner Ice Shelf have been identified as a special area in the southern Weddell Sea, where the outflow of Ice Shelf Water (ISW) of the Filchner Ronne Ice Shelf interacts with warmer deep water of the Weddell Gyre. The region is a key area for the formation of Weddell Sea Deep and Bottom Water (WSDW and WSBW) and therefore of major importance for the global ocean circulation. These hydrographical features are supposed to be the primary cause converting this region into a biological "hotspot" indicated by recent investigations on the migration and foraging behaviour of southern elephant seals. These studies achieved data on extended residence times of the seals in the area of the Filchner Outflow of up to three months, both in summer and winter. Previous investigations from the 1980's tell us that the region is characterized by high abundances of different warm blooded species and a higher production in the pelagic system as compared to other regions of the Weddell Sea. This holds especially true for the Antarctic silverfish with its high biomass and production values, which is an important food source for marine mammals in the upper food web. The formation of deep and bottom water (WSDW/WSBW) in the southern Weddell Sea is strongly influenced by flow of Ice Shelf Water (ISW) out of the Filchner-Ronne Ice cavity. Own hydrographic measurements along the Filchner Ice Front carried out with Polarstern in 1995, show that the breakout of three giant icebergs in 1986 and their grounding on the shallow Berkner Bank still modified the circulation and water mass formation in the Filchner Trough. Even the adjacent sea areas show significant changes in the water mass characteristics and flow patterns compared to measurements from the early 1980s. A recent model scenario indicates that a redirection of the coastal current into the Filchner Trough and underneath the Filchner-Ronne Ice Shelf during the twenty-first century would lead to increased inflow of warm MWDW waters (Modified Warm Deep Water) into the deep southern ice-shelf cavity accompanied by a water temperature increase of more than 2°C, with the consequence of higher melting rates of the shelf-ice, a higher shelf ice dynamic and a higher habitat water temperature. A higher shelf ice dynamic with higher numbers of iceberg scouring events and an increase in water temperature will significantly influence the biodiversity of the southern Weddell Sea. The main objectives of the ANT-XXIX/9 (FOS) expedition are: 1. To characterize the hydrographical features and water masses of the Filchner Outflow System (FOS), the role of bathymetry for current patterns, and the deep and bottom water formation rates with the related basal melting rates. 2. To estimate possible changes in these hydrographical features induced by observed change in Antarctic climate. 3. To investigate the high productive Filchner Outflow System as a biological "hotspot", producing a high-energy turnover to subsequent trophic levels up to the seals as top predators of the food web. 4. To estimate the impact of possible changes in the hydrography and increasing shelf and sea ice dynamics on the biodiversity and ecosystem functioning of the southern Weddell Sea.

Proposed flight patterns include flights from near-coastal areas to the plateau investigating potential gradients in surface albedo, event-oriented patterns, e.g., after the passage of a synoptic system that led to precipitation only in parts of the flight region, and cross- and square-shaped patterns close to Kohnen to couple ground based and airborne measurements and to check the representativeness of albedo and bidirectional reflectivity measured at the station. In addition two flights will be used to map surface morphology and internal structure of the ice sheet between the CoFi ice coring sites in DML and a grid around Kohnen station. Remarks: D. Steinhage (AWI) It is planned to carry out static phase sensitive at different locations in Dronning Maud Land in order to detect local thickness changes caused by subglacial melting, respectively deformation of the ice sheet. The measurements shall be carried out in the vicinity of Neumayer III and Kohnen station as well as in the Recovery Glacier region, if accessible above a know subglacial lake. While at one of there sites the measurements will be carried out through out a full year, the others have to be revisited next season.
