Chouker (University of Munich) Consequences of longterm-Confinement and Hypobaric HypOxia on Immunity in the Antarctic Environment at NEUMAYER STATION III In the unique environment of the NEUMAYER STATION III, stress- dependent immune-modulation can be investigated and compared to conditions at the Concordia (3200m) where hypoxia is an additional stressor as shown in the context of the recently completed European study CHOICE (Consequences of long term-Confinement & Hypobaric HypOxia on Immunity in the antarCtic Environment), allowing for the first time to investigate the effects of hypobaric hypoxia and confinement on the immune system in a standardized fashion.

Kipfstuhl (AWI) The main goal of the expedition is to drill several shallow firn/ice cores (up to 200 m) in the close vicinity of Kohnen Station and on the ice divide to Dome Fuji. Besides the reconstruction of the climatic and environmental conditions during the past 2000 years (IPICs 2k) the primary objective is to understand better the densification and the air enclosure process of the coldest firn as the closest analogue of glacial firn. Our understanding of the present-day firnification decides about the the age difference of ice and air of glacial ice, the age of CO2 and the question whether temperature leads or lags CO2. Of particular interest ist the effect of impurities on density, densification and the layering at the firn-ice transition where air is entrapped in ice. On one core extensive microstructural analysis will be performed (grain boundaries and c-axes). Associated to CoFi are surface snow studies at the Kohnen Station during the entire season. We will do snow sampling for density and water isotopes, measure water isotopes in the firn air and determine microstructural properties of snow and firn.

Remarks / Description: PI: Dr. Hans-Ulrich Peter (University of Jena) Aim of the project “Current environmental situation and management proposals for the Fildes Peninsula Region” is the continuation of an updated standardized assessment of fauna and flora of the Fildes Peninsula and Ardley Island with focus on birds and seals. Any considerable environmental changes will be analyzed to keep the scientific data base up to date. Within this project the monitoring of penguins (Pygoscelis spec.) together with T.Hermann, Montreal, and J-H. Kim, Seoul, and Southern Giant Petrels (Macronectes giganteus) will be continued. The first aim of the project “Population ecology and migration of Antarctic Skuas” on Fildes Peninsula is the continuation of the long-term project on the population ecology of both skua species and hybrid pairs. Together with colleagues from the Universidad de Concepcion we are collection samples from skuas for analyses of COPs in feathers/blood and biochemical markers of health status .

In particular spaceborne SAR data providing insights into ice mass balance, ice dynamics and ice shelf disintegration of the Antarctic shall be received by GARS O’Higgins ground station. In general, research related to system Earth shall be supported by SAR data reception (e.g. of TanDEM-X mission), by providing TT&C support for scientific satellite missions like TerraSAR-X and GRACE, and by VLBI, GNSS, tide gauge and gravimeter observations. GARS O’Higgins is network station of the International VLBI Service for Geodesy and Astrometry (IVS), of the “Tracking Active Galactic Nuclei with Austral Milliarcsecond Interferometry” (TANAMI) network, of the International GNSS Service (IGS), and of the “Cooperative Network for GIOVE Observations” (CONGO). The census of breeding pairs of penguin colonies on Peninsula Schmidt (Gentoo penguins) and on Isla Kopaitic (Gentoo, Chinstrap and Adelié penguins) shall be repeated.

Remarks / Description: PI: Dr. Coen Hofstede (AWI) The project’s goal is to obtain the deep vibroseismic data at Kohnen station to deduce the distribution of the crystal orientation fabric (COF) as a function of depth and compare it to the in-situ deep ice-core data, radar analysis and explosive seismic data for future applications; furthermore, to deduce the properties of the bed underneath the ice sheet. To this end a vibroseismic survey in AVO (amplitude variation with offset) configuration along two perpendicular profiles will be deployed. This is complemented by several profiling surveys with the p-wave vibrator (EnviroVibe) and selected explosive seismics.

Luff (BfS) The German Federal Office for Radiation Protection (BfS) is the competent institution in Germany to protect man and the environment against ionising radiation. BfS runs a nation wide ambient dose rate monitoring network since over 30 years. It comprises of about 1800 stationary gamma dose rate probes. The network technology is kept at state-of-the-art level through continuous development on soft- and hardware as well as on detector technology. This includes long-time test series under various environmental conditions, international data and technology exchange.

Remarks / Description: PI: I. van Opzeeland (AWI) Weddell, Ross, leopard and crabeater seals produce underwater sounds which are thought to play a role during mating. This study will use passive acoustic localization techniques to investigate acoustic behaviour in relation to male reproductive strategies in Antarctic pinnipeds. Acoustic techniques such as hydrophone arrays (from which time-of-arrival differences of calls at hydrophone elements and subsequently the position of calling animals can be derived) enable study of the movement patterns of vocalizing individuals in their underwater habitat. This technique has successfully been used to track underwater movements of vocalizing individuals in other seal species in temperate and Arctic regions, but has so far not been used to investigate Antarctic species. In addition to the hydrophone array, two underwater camera systems will be deployed as part of a pilot project to explore the possibilities of using underwater visual data for obtaining behavioural data on Weddell seals during the breeding season.

Staubwasser (University of Cologne) The objective of this study is to reveal sources and mechanisms responsible for high supply of soluble Fe in regions close to ocean islands in the otherwise HPLC Southern Ocean with the common effect of stimulating plankton growth. The focus of this study will be on King George Island (KGI), Western Antarctic Peninsula. Fe isotopes from glacial outwash material, shelf sediments and pore waters, and transects of water column profiles together with full diagenetic inorganic geochemical profiling will be used to fingerprint Fe sources and supply pathways. In the light of rapid glacier retreat on KGI due to global warming and enhanced outwash of glacially eroded material, three possible reaction pathways will be investigated: 1) early diagenetic recycling of Fe and diffusion out of sediments fuelled by high productivity; 2) accumulation and resuspension of solid reactive Fe phases (including diagenetic Fe-oxyhydroxides) in surface sediments; 3) direct dissolution of reactive Fe minerals and Fe-rich silicates from glacial outwash.

Remarks / Description: PI: D. Zitterbart (University of Erlangen) This project aims to understand the reorganization process in penguin huddles and the implications for social thermoregulation. We will install a remote-operated penguin observatory including hard- and software for fast image acquisition and real-time processing. The observatory will be capable of detecting the whole huddle, as well as tracking the movements of thousands of individual penguins throughout the winter. An accurate count of animals within the colony and the size of individual animals will also be recorded, and together our data will help to estimate how the increasing environmental strain such as ongoing climate changes, thinning sea ice and reduced krill availability, is affecting Emperor penguins. Boebel (AWI) Geophysical and microbiological studies, including the deployment of ocean bottom seismometers, shall be conducted at the South West Indian Ridge to study tectonic and hydrothermal processes in this ultra-low spreading region ( PIs Vera Schlindwein, Antje Boetius). Thereafter, the ship steams south for Antarctica to supply Neumayer Base. On Antarctica’s continental shelf, sediment samples shall be retrieved to collect foraminifera for cultivation, which allows identifying geochemical changes in the deep-sea (PI Jutta Wollenburg, Trace metal). Subsequently, the ship transects the Weddell Sea, passing the Antarctic Peninsula and Elephant Island on its way to Punta Arenas. En route, between Cape Town and Punta Arenas, vertical temperature and salinity profiles will be taken and vertically profiling Argo floats will be deployed in addition to recovering and redeployment of oceanographic moorings (PI Olaf Boebel, HAFOS). These efforts are part of long term observations designed to study slow changes of watermass properties and circulation. During the cruise, two data sets will be collected (MAPS): a) video snippets of automatic IR based detections and b) protocols visual sightings by independent overservers. Along the entire cruise track, oceanographic, meteorological and thermographic data (PI O. Boebel) will be collected quasi-continuously, along with opportunistic surveys of marine mammals and birds (PI C. Joiris, PolE).

Gutt (AWI) Two projects will be carried out: “Larsen Shelf Study of the Ocean” (LASSO), an interdisciplinary study in the Larsen A and B areas, and off the Larsen C ice shelf East of the Antarctic Peninsula. These investigations are integrative part of the new biology programme “Antarctic Thresholds - Ecosystem Resilience and Adaptation" (AnT-ERA) of SCAR. The aims are to study (1) an ecological shift on the marine habitat after the disintegration of the Larsen A and B ice shelves and (2) the formation of bottom water off the Larsen C ice shelf. The second project is a krill survey in the North-Western Weddell Sea as a contribution to the „Convention on the Conservation of Living Antarctic Resources“ (CCAMLR). Foci of this study are to quantitative aspects of krill biology, distribution, biomass, demography and phenology, population dynamics, zooplankton species composition and abundance as well as physical oceanography.

Lemke (AWI) During the cruise ANT XXIX/6 it is planned to carry out an interdisciplinary research programme on sea ice, ocean and ecosystem during winter to obtain an understanding of physical and biogeochemical properties and processes during the sea ice growth season. This will be the first Polarstern winter expedition in the Southern Ocean since 2006. The investigations include the role of sea ice as a reaction surface for important chemical conversion processes, and as a source or sink for climate gases. In addition biogeochemical processes in the ice and ecosystem changes in sea ice and ocean will be studied. Finally, ocean water mass properties and their changes will be investigated.

Meyer (AWI) Krill is a keystone species in the Antarctic marine ecosystem and latest evidence has shown that krill population dynamic is affected by regional climate warming in the Southern Ocean. We propose to investigate the role of sea ice for krill with emphasis on larval krill during winter with the intention to provide information to enable the prediction of likely effects of environmental change (e.g. decrease of sea ice) on krill recruitment success as well as on the biology of other dominant organism associated with sea ice such as salps, copepods chaetognaths and the microbial food web including ice biota during winter. The central hypothesis is that recruitment success of krill depends on a series of critical stages that have to be successfully passed, whereby ice-related critical stages are more important than the non-ice related ones. We have selected a study area at the Scotia-Northern Weddell Sea boundary where high abundance of larval and adult krill occurs and historical data are available, a prerequisite for further modelling studies. The area is adjacent to the main population centre of krill, situated within the eastern Scotia Sea and characterized by a decline in sea ice cover in the last 20 years as well as a high degree of inter-annual and regional variability in ice cover and food concentrations. Our overall strategy will be to combine two surveys in transects from open water to the marginal ice zone (MIZ) into the pack ice and back to open water, with along station in the pack ice for detailed process studies. This sampling strategy will provide us with information on the spatial and seasonal dynamics of the environment and how it affects the development of larval krill and other organism under study.

Purpose: Aim of the project “Monitoring Maxwell Bay” is the elaboration of an updated standardized assessment of fauna and flora of the Fildes Peninsula and Ardley Island with focus on birds and seals. The reaction of animals and plants on different forms of human impact as well as any considerable environmental changes were analyzed to keep the scientific data base up to date and usable during the process of discussion on international level about an anticipated ASMA. Within this project the monitoring of penguins (Pygoscelis spec.) and Southern Giant Petrels (Macronectes giganteus) was continued. These long-term datasets date back to the 1980ies. The first aim of the project “Population ecology and migration of Antarctic Skuas” on Fildes Peninsula was the continuation of the long-term project on the population ecology of both skua species and hybrid pairs. The distribution of skua nests was mapped, adults and chicks were banded and the breeding success of chicks was determined. Skuas are closely related species from the Northern and Southern hemisphere which overwinter on the oceans. Since it is difficult to distinguish these, reliable data on the temporal and spatial migration patterns are absent. In the seasons 2008/09 and 2009/10 in cooperation with BAS GLS-Loggers were attached on breeding birds to investigate the winter migration of both species. In January and February 2011 these loggers were removed and the data processed. They provide a much more detailed picture of Brown skuas in the overwintering area of the South Atlantic and the migration route of South polar skuas to the Arctic.

Within this project the monitoring of penguins (Pygoscelis spec.) and Southern Giant Petrels (Macronectes giganteus) was continued. These long-term datasets date back to the 1980ies. The first aim of the project “Population ecology and migration of Antarctic Skuas” on Fildes Peninsula was the continuation of the long-term project on the population ecology of both skua species and hybrid pairs. The distribution of skua nests was mapped, adults and chicks were banded and the breeding success of chicks was determined. Skuas are closely related species from the Northern and Southern hemisphere which overwinter on the oceans. Since it is difficult to distinguish these, reliable data on the temporal and spatial migration patterns are absent. In the seasons 2008/09 and 2009/10 in cooperation with BAS GLS-Loggers were attached on breeding birds to investigate the winter migration of both species. In January and February 2011 these loggers were removed and the data processed. They provide a much more detailed picture of Brown skuas in the overwintering area of the South Atlantic and the migration route of South polar skuas to the Arctic.
