Purpose: Characterize the structures and the deformation patterns of the Terre Adélie and George Vth Land (East Antarctica: 135 to 145° E) long-lived lithosphere.
Summary of activities: • Structural mapping based on both structural analysis and magnetic properties of rocks (AMS), • 3D mapping of the lithosphere and the underlying upper mantle using seismological data. This represents an essential tool to map the structures associated with successive deformation event and developed at various crustal levels, • physical and chemical characterization of the various blocks of the TAC lithosphere: thermo-mechanical state and thermal conditions of the deformation events, physical properties of materials at the mineral scale, importance and nature of the magmatic and hydrothermal fluids in interaction with the deformation, etc... • Systematic geochronological investigation from samples coming from rocky outcrops but also from moraines, which are collected by glaciers and therefore provide important constraints on subglacial rock compositions of areas they moved through. The scientific group Transferts Lithosphériques – Laboratoire Magmas et Volcans (TL-LMV), which proposes the ArLiTA project has an long field practice in Antarctica field (organization of more than 14 summer campaigns since 1991), a recognized expertise on the geology of the TAC (cf. the TL-LMV publications list) as well as competences in various analytical and scientific approaches used for this project. Moreover, because of its significant implication in the national (INSU-CNRS, CNFRA) and international (SCAR) organisations, the TL-LMV can carry with efficiency and reliability the coordination of the various scientific approaches and the cooperation of the different national and international partners involved in the ArLiTA program.
