Main Activity/ Remarks: Architecture of the East Antarctic lithosphere-Terre Adélie The main goal of the ArLiTA project is to characterize the architecture and the deformation structures of the Neoarchean and the Paleoproterozoic lithosphere of the Terre Adélie and George Vth Land (East Antarctica: 135 to 145°E). The project integrates various complementary approaches: mapping from seismological data, systematic mapping of the structures by tectonic analysis, petrophysics (textural analyses, Anisotropy of Magnetic Susceptibility (AMS), seismic properties modeling…), characterization of materials and paleofluids (petrology, geochemistry) and thermomecanics (thermobarometry).

Main Activity/ Remarks: After 9 years for the Concordiastro (5 years) and Astro-Concordia (4 years) programmes essentially devoted to the site testing, 2009-2010 will be a year of transition. During 2009 the conclusions of the ARENA European network prospects will be published, and the 5-year astronomical prospect exercise of INSU will be renewed. The astronomical priorities for the following 4-year IPEV programme will then be clarified next year. The present one-year programmeincludes the official start of the full size A-STEP planetary transit instrument, together with the continuation of long term already running instruments and complements of site testing for making more robust the statistics of what is now well known or exploring more parameters of interest for the future.

Main Activity/ Remarks: Calibration – validation of meteorological and climate models and satellite retrieval, Antarctic coast to Dome C This project is designed to acquire field data in Adélie Land and at the Dome C to better verify, validate or improve meteorological and climate modelling at the process scale and satellite retrieval (thermal infra-red and passive microwaves) over the Antarctic region. This project takes over the IPY-CONCORDIASI project for the IR and meteorological modeling, and it is the field component of the «Surface mass balance uncertainties» workpackage of the FP7 European project ICE2SEA planned to start in 2010.

Main Activity/ Remarks: CAMISTIC Ground Thz Camera for Antarctic Camistic is a Sub-millimetre / Thz camera with goal of site testing at Concordia by measuring the transmission and stability of the atmosphere. This camera placed on the 0.8m telescope IRAIT will explore the Thz domain in preparation of sub-millimetre astronomy experiments with larger telescopes at dome C. Astronomy goals are the study of star formation and the early stages of the universe.

Main Activity/ Remarks: CESOA - Atmospheric Sulfur Cycle in relation with climate at mid and high Southern latitudes The atmospheric Sulfur cycle at mid and high southern latitudes: interannual variability of marine DMS emissions (sea-ice, ocean temperature, oceanic DMS content, chlorophyll a, short-term climatic event such as ENSO) and future response to global climate change. That includes a year-record study of DMS and sulfur aerosol at DDU, Amsterdam and Crozet, DMS in seawater collected during ship traverses between different stations as well as a study dedicated to atmospheric oxidants (H2O2, HCHO and O3) at DDU then at Amsterdam.

Main Activity/ Remarks: Cetacean distribution off Adélie Land This project aims at documenting background information on summer presence and relative abundance of cetaceans over the continental shelf off Terre Adélie, Eastern Antarctica. It will constitute one of the rare French contribution to the ongoing assessment of large whales of the Southern Ocean conducted by the International Whaling Commission, as well as to the Regional Non-Lethal Whale Research Partnerships in the Southern Oceanrecently proposed by Australia. Two observers will survey relative abundances of minke, fin, humpback, blue, right and killer whales from onboard R/V l'Astrolabe used as a platform of opportunity. Field work will be conducted during existing oceanographic surveys (ICO2TA, ALBION) conducted annually in January off Dumont D'Urville. Cetacean distribution will be related to the distribution of biotic (zooplankton) and abiotic (hydrographic parameters, sea ice condition and physiography) collected during the cruises. When possible, photo ID and biopsies samples of humpback and blue whales will be collected and compared to existing catalogues from the breeding grounds in order to assess the migratory connection between breeding grounds and feeding areas. After two years we will assess the outcome of the study to decide whether it is worth conducting whale research at this location on a longer term and possibly on a larger scale.

Main Activity/ Remarks: Chemistry of Present and Future Lower Atmospheric Chemistry over Central Antarctica : Sulfur Cycle (ORE CESOA) This program concerns the chemistry of the lower atmosphere in central Antarctica in view to (1) document the free troposphere at very high southern latitudes (in complement to the studies carried out in the marine boundary layer at DDU), (2) evaluate the spatial representativeness of chemical signals stored in the ice at the EPICA deep drill site. This projet is of course coupled with the study of physic of the atmosphere. It focuses on sulphur species (DMS, DMSO, SO2 et aerosols) as well as on oxidants (O3, H2O2 et HCHO).

Main Activity/ Remarks: Dynamics of coastal outlet glaciers and implications on the overall mass balance of the Antarctic This programm aims at a better understanding of the specific dynamics of coastal outlet glaciers. Recent studies show rapid and recent ice thicknesses and especially surface velocities changes for these glaciers which impact far inland under the form of large-scale ice volume losses for the ice sheet (enhanced drainage). The programm plans to collect the required field data so as to understand and to model these coastal glaciers dynamics with an emphasis on the test zone of the Astrolabe glacier.

Main Activity/ Remarks: Feeding strategy and mechanisms of behavioural and physiological adaptation of penguins to climatic variability: their limitations and its impact on population dynamics We want to determine the extent to which penguins are able to cope with seasonal and interannual climatic changes and their consequences on the localization and abundance of their marine resources. We thus investigate their population dynamics by automatically tracking many individuals whose history is known. To this approach, which therefore enable us to avoid the bias of flipper banding and as well have control birds which are undisturbed, will be superimposed two studies, ashore in the breeding colony and at sea. In the colony, we aim to understand those behavioural and physiological processes which enable the birds to minimize body fuel utilization while fasting in order to succeed in breeding but still ensure their survival once those fuels are depleted. At sea, with biologging, we want to determine the feeding performance of the birds in relation to their individual experience and fitness, i.e. immunocompetence and body.

Main Activity/ Remarks: The Atmospheric Electric Circuit - Links to Weather & Climate The scientific objectives of this proposal are: 1. Quantify the accuracy to which the meteorological generators of the global circuit can be monitored on the Antarctic plateau by comparing vertical electric field and air-earth current measurements made at Concordia with simultaneous measurements made at Vostok. 2. Undertake detailed case and statistical studies of the measured responses to external (space weather/cosmic ray) and internal (seasonal/diurnal variations of global aerosol and thunderstorm activity) influences on the global circuit, and compare them with the responses of the UTD global circuit model to these influences. 3. To better quantify and confirm the link between the global thunderstorm activity and the global electric circuit. 4. Determine the effect of any variations in the ground-ionosphere column conductivity on the estimates of the meteorological generator.

Main Activity/ Remarks: Permanent magnetic observatories The permanent magnetic observatories of Amsterdam, Crozet, Dumont d'Urville and Kerguelen allow continuing registrations of the Earth's magnetic field changes, with sampling rates of 1s and 1mn. Absolute measurements of the magnetic field components are also performed regularly all along the year. The data processing and dissemination in the World Data Centers (WDC) across the Intermagnet network, are almost real-time thanks to new acquisition systems integrating daily and weekly shipment protocols.

Main Activity/ Remarks: The glaciers, an observatory of climate, Antarctic component - GLACIOCLIM-SAMBA This is the Antarctic component of the GLACIOCLIM ORE/SO, to detect, monitor and understand climate and mass balance variability and change in the glacial environment. The program maintains a surface mass balance network at Cap Prud'homme (CP, summer and winter surveys), along a 150 km transept (1 survey/yr), and at Concordia (1 survey/year or more). Meteorological instruments are also be deployed near CP and special meteorological and glaciological observing periods are organized.

Main Activity/ Remarks: HAMSTRAD - H2O Antarctica Microwave Stratospheric and Tropospheric Radiometers The HAMSTRAD project is intended to focus on the long-term time evolution of water vapour both in the stratosphere and in the troposphere that can impact on the climate evolution. Stratospheric phenomena of dehydration/rehydration, descent, filamentation and vortex breakup will be studied. Phase change together with ice diurnal cycle will be investigated in the troposphere. These measurements will be compared to the 3D Chemical Transport Model MOCAGE. The project will also participate to the validation of space-borne sensors measuring tropospheric and stratospheric H2O. Finally, HAMSTRAD will help validating Southern Hemisphere high latitudes analyses from the European Centre ECMWF.

Main Activity/ Remarks: Sea ice lipids. A new tool for paleoclimate research? The current project aims to investigate whether some well characterised organic chemicals from microalgae can be used as proxy indicators of current and past sea ice levels in the Antarctic area. This project will consist of performing a calibration of the proxies. Concentrations of selected biomarkers in sea ice and phytoplankton samples collected during an entire year will be correlated both with the environmental conditions and sea ice physical properties. The outcomes of this project will then enable reconstructions of past sea ice extents to be performed at unprecedented high resolution.

Main Activity/ Remarks: Integrated Coastal Ocean Observations in Terre Adélie Long term synoptic monitoring of polar oceans has always been a challenge and annual mesoscale surveys are rare. If krill dominated areas are quite well known, monitoring is needed to study the trophic web in neritic zone. The motivation of the project is to gather through a multidisciplinary effort, long-term information on the composition of the marine biota over the Eastern Antarctic continental shelf in relation to environmental variability including seaice variability. Key species or assemblages will be monitored. For the pelagic realm, the study will focus on the control of the pelagic ecosystem by few species of euphausiids and (micro)nekton on plankton. For the benthic realm, it will be proposed to understand how communities indicate the level of perturbance linked to iceberg scouring and how the benthos and demersal fish may react to glacier retreat.

Main Activity/ Remarks: Test in extreme natural conditions of the MagNet/NetLander magnetometer developed for planetary exploration Long term testing of the stability of the 3-axis fluxgate magnetometer designed for measurements onboard autonomous stations at the Mars surface. At Dome C, the magnetometer sensor will be exposed to temperatures variations (typically in the range -70°C to -30°C) similar to those expected at the Mars surface. The Mars magnetometer performances will be characterized through a comparison with the recordings of the observatory magnetometer, which is installed in controlled environment.

Main Activity/ Remarks: Permanent Magnetic Observatory at Concordia The present scientific project aims at maintaining the permanent magnetic observatory of Dome C. The observatory (instruments, acquisition system and dedicated human observer) allows to perform measurements at one second sampling rate and absolute measurements of the three components of the Earth's magnetic field. The maintenance of facilities, processing and scientific valorisation of the data is done in collaboration with Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia (INGV), Rome.The observatory already follows Intermagnet’s recommendations and will become, in a near future, an IMO (Intermagnet Magnetic Observatory) in the fullest sense. The collected data will be disseminate to the WDC (World Data Centers) in order to be easily accessible to the whole scientific community.

Main Activity/ Remarks: Nitrate Evolution in Dôme C surface snow The aim of this project is to gain insight into key parameters responsible for the post depositional effects observed on nitrate in Dôme C surface snow. We propose to use O and N stable isotopes as (1) a probe of the post-depositional processes and (2) as a potential surface UV marker. Our data will be compared and associated to complementary measurements at DC (snow specific surface area, solar flux, NOx emissions by the snowpack) and also comapred with the Dry Valleys measurements,subjecttofundingoftheANR-OPALEandNSF proposals, respectively.

These programmes are related to: tsunami warning system, satellite altimetry processing and validation, Antarctic Circumpolar Current monitoring and secular mean sea level trends. This tide gauges network is part of the GLOSS global network

Main Activity/ Remarks: Seabirds and marine mammals as sentinels of global changes in the Southern Ocean The program uses seabirds and marine mammals as indicators of global changes in the marine ecosystems of the southern ocean. Through a network of 4 observatories (Crozet, Kerguelen, Amsterdam Islands and Dumont d'Urville in Terre Adelie) the populations of 25 species of the marine top predators and their distribution at sea are monitored since 50 years. These individually based long term information are used to understand the processes though which climate affect marine ecosystems, and to make predictions on the future changes in these ecosystems, as well as to propose conservation measures to limit the impact of fisheries on some populations.

Main Activity/ Remarks: Marine species flocks in Terre Adélie The East Antarctic area situated between the Mertz and Astrolabe ice tongues, recently sampled (CEAMARC), displays a number of different biotopes likely to produce « species flocks ». Especially, archipelagos form fragmented habitats that could favour rapid speciation of some taxonomic groups. Pointe Geologie is an archipelago and is chosen as model environement and five taxa that are thought to have produced « micro species flocks» (notothenioids, crinoids, echinoids, isopods, algae) will be studied at three taxonomic and temporal scales.

Main Activity/ Remarks: Global Seismological Observatory (GSO) The main purpose of the program is the observation of the ground displacement in the high latitudes of the southern hemisphere, at broadband frequencies and with large dynamic range. The data we record are distributed to the international scientific community through several means: www, ftp, CDs and more recently also in real-time. The continuity, quality, stability and homogeneity of those observations are of the upmost importance for their continued usefullness. We plan to continue the consolidation of our equipment, and to implement real time data transmission for all our stations to Strasbourg and the international community.

Main Activity/ Remarks: Seismology at Concordia The program has two main goals: the set-up and operation of a broad-band station "observatory-like" and the deployment of a seismometer array. Both aspects of the project aim at contributing the study of both the Earth's structure and earthquakes. The observatory station is intended to supplement the worldwide seismological network in a region where its coverage remains very sparse. The goal of the seismometer array is to observe low-energy seismic waves. The Concordia site benefits from several favorable conditions for deploying such an array.

Title: Organisation de la gestion des déchets
Fixed Site/Field Camp/Ship: Dumont d'Urville, Concordia and Cap Prudhomme stations
Objective:
Implementation Report: The waste management on the three stations follow the recommendations of Annex III of the Madrid protocol. The attach document (in French) describes the main plan at Dumont d'Urville (DDU) and is applicable to Cap Prudhomme. At Concordia, all the wastes are sorted by category and transported to Dumont d'Urville by the ground traverses. At DDU, some of these wastes are sorted again and added to the wastes produced on this station. Then all the wastes return either in Australia (according to some special agreements) or in France. At Concordia station, the grey water are treated in order to reuse 80% of the water.
